Man Beat Vancouver Riot

UPDATE: The Toronto Star has identified the heroic bystander as Robert MacKay. Read his story here.

As rioters smashed windows, set cars on fire, and destroyed local Vancouver businesses Wednesday, one man stood out among others for his heroic efforts to keep the peace.

The search is on for the mystery man, who was viciously beaten by the crowd after he tried to stop rioters from breaking department store windows.

A bystander's video shows a man in a black t-shirt and blue cap standing between the store and the mob. After pulling a few men away from the window, he shoves one man into the crowd with what appears to be a long stick. See the video below.

The crowd then surrounds him as at least eight men punch him in the head and face. He's pulled to the ground where they kick him until a man in a vintage Vancouver Canucks jersey pushes them away. The man is motionless for a few seconds until he is helped up by a Good Samaritan in the jersey and a man in a plaid shirt. There appears to be blood on his head as he is led away and the mob disperses.

Throughout the attack, the rioters cheer on the mob, many filming the attack.

"Canada needs more people with his character and courage," Tweeted federal Heritage Minister James Moore.

The identity of the mob victim is still unknown, but Facebook groups continue to pop up in the search for peace makers, with many asking for photos and tips of about any perpetrators.

The man has also garnered national media attention. CBC called him "Vancouver's beaten riot hero" while The Toronto Star, which has the largest national circulation, is also searching for his identity.

One version of the video on YouTube has been removed for hate speech.

Editor's note: an earlier version of this article identified the man helping the victim as wearing a Boston Bruins jersey. It has been updated to state that he was wearing a vintage Canucks jersey.

glad the guy's alright. but he shouldn't have stood up to a mob like that, when a group enters a mob mentality like that .....well it could have been worse, considering that they where already violent/destructive. Rome knew the power of the mob...

I don't know how these stupid idots sleep at night! They obviously have no shame, no heart and just to look all big and bad. Bravo! Bunch of low life punks with no self respect, no dignity, nothing to do but cause madness and shame onto our Country! I am so disgusted, so disappointed.
I wonder if their families saw this, what (if anything) did they say or do? 'Cause I tell you something, if I saw my kids or anyone from my family being a part of this crap, I'd have beaten their asses black and blue and call the media and tell them to tape the woopings.

Aaaaaaand you're part of the problem. Kids act out what they're taught. If they are taught that violence is ok, they're more than likely going to be violent. There are other ways. :)

I disagree. These thugs already have it in them, so they need to be dealt with in the language they already know. I'm tired of treating those who hold civil society hostage as being 'fragile misguided souls simply looking for hug".

Some of the people with faces covered could be anarchist. And who brings a gas mask to the hockey game?

The article is wrong. The guy who comes to his aid is wearing a vintage gawd-awful Vancouver shirt from the 90's, and not a Boston one.

In any event, this man deserves the order of Canada. I hope is was not that hurt.

It is unbelievably disheartening to see this guy swarmed by a pile of human refuse for trying to do the right thing. Hopefully his injuries are not serious. The only positive is that there are probably enough images to identify most of the participants.

This man is indeed a hero.

Same kind of hero as someone who tries to subdue an armed robber; one who is lucky to not be seriously injured or worse.

No material object(s) is worth someone's life.
