UPDATE: As a Huffington Post Canada reader rightly noted, this video was shot and uploaded last year. It is not a new video.
___

It begins like a family friendly Disney movie with a small cat nuzzling a fawn under a car in a suburban neighbourhood in Cranbrook, B.C.

But the film turns grim as the fawn's mother strolls into frame and attacks a curious dog named Star. As hoofs fly, Star's owner screams for the beating to stop.

Posted to YouTube, the video has gone viral, with nearly three million views as of Tuesday morning.

According to the YouTube posting, Star got away after about 23 seconds. The dog was limping but has recovered. The cat, River, is fine.

Please note, this video is old. Since this has happened Cranbrook authority has been working on our 'urban deer' problem.

It's best to keep your pets inside when there's wild life of any sorts around. Animals go by instinct and this deer was just protecting her baby.

As far as the deer was concerned, that dog was the same as a coyote or wolf. Her fawn was easy prey, and like any mother, her instinct was to protect her helpless baby.

Don't mess with a mother with young. This is a consequence of human encroachment on the deer's territory. The mother laid the fawn down to look for food, and then felt threatened by the domestic animals. It attacked to protect it's young. A human mother would do the same thing. Or a bear for that matter. We shouldn't be surprised when herbivores act aggressively to protect their young. Deer haven't survived for so long by not caring what happens to their young.

The only reason it didn't attack the cat at first was because the cat was so small, and the mother didn't see it as an immediate threat. Dogs on the other hand have been hunting deer for millennia. So the very sight of one in unfamiliar surroundings (suburbs to a deer) put it in fight mode to protect the fawn. I'm sure people are calling for the deer to be killed, or something otherwise ignorant. We have to share the earth the the creatures who had it first. The deer were already there when man decided to build houses. Keep your dog on a leash when you know there are young deer and their mothers roaming for food in the habitat that humans have destroyed.

The owner of the dog said it's old, deaf and almost blind-it was hit by a truck when it was 10 years old. So the dog may not have seen the deer coming.
