William And Kate In Ottawa: The Best Places Not On The Royal Couple's Itinerary (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post Canada     First Posted: 06/30/11 06:52 AM ET   Updated: 08/30/11 06:12 AM ET

Prince William and Kate arrive in Ottawa at 2:30 p.m. ET today for the start of their nine-day Canadian tour and first official overseas visit.

More than 1,300 journalists have been accredited to cover the tour, and there are expectations that with Canada Day falling on a Friday and sunny skies forecast, a record 500,000-plus Canadians will turn out to see the Royal Couple on Parliament Hill.

Almost much by definition, royals spend all of their time on official tours checking out “official” sights—and few Canadian cities are better stocked with those than Ottawa. But if Will and Kate want to go rogue during their three-day visit to the region, here’s our top 10 list of cool stops for the world’s most famous newlyweds.

Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC)
1233 Wellington Street, 613-236-5196

A few years ago, the GCTC moved from its long-time home in a converted garage to a fancy new theatre in the booming Wellington Village neighbourhood. But it hasn't lost its focus on edgy works by emerging and established Canadian playwrights. The new theatre -- like the old one -- brings you close to the performers, and you might see anything from a one-woman show about menstruation to an ensemble piece about the Vietnam War. One thing is certain: it's not the Royal Albert Hall, and if Kate and Will are looking for a break from routine, that's probably a good thing.

While we're at it, the best movie filmed in Ottawa is JESUS CHRIST, VAMPIRE HUNTER! (My favorite scene is his kung fu battle with 40 atheists.)

Release the Hydrogen Economy now!
03:27 PM on 07/01/2011
One has to SHUDDER at the sheer ENVIRONMENTAL footprint degradation that will caused by these two no matter where they go.

They could be doing so MUCH for the release of the Hydrogen Economy but this phrase DOES NOT EXIST in the Royal Dictionary.

Back home in London, the mayoralty politics is fierce on the release/suppression of The Hydrogen Economy divide. One mayor orders up 60 POLLUTION FREE Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses. He goes down to defeat and the next guy in cancels the order and reduces it to 10 Hydrogen buses thanks to British Petroleum lobbyists. We can't CRIMP the Queen's Share Holdings in BP by converting to The Hydrogen Economy, now can we Mr. Prince.

And then there is the Hydrogen Fuel Cell London Black Cab that will also show up as sideshow at the 1012 Olympics in London.

Now, if these two used a Mercedes Benz Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric powered car for these ceremonial exhibitions, they would be doing the World a great service.

The obviousl less than steller journalist (if qualified) clearly has zero clue whose opinion is unworthy and without and sense of base. .\When will we see actually good jhournalism with logical and positive stories about Canada. This piece is obnoxious and uncalled for.

Why? Shouldn't a people pay for their royal family in any good monarchy?

No list can be truly complete, of course. But to get a true taste of Ottawa, the Royals should hoist a brew at The Dom in the ByWard Market. Or, cross the road to have a pint at The Laff. Love to see them there.
