Marc Martel: Freddie Mercury Impression Makes For A Very Viral Video

Martel

By the time Marc Martel finishes his Freddie Mercury impression -- a stripped down, living-room rendition of a Queen classic -- it's clear that we have found somebody to love.

Since 'Somebody To Love' was posted on YouTube on September 20, the 34-year-old Canadian's home recording has amassed nearly 1.2 million views.

The clip was part of an audition for the Queen Extravaganza, a contest marking the 40th anniversary of the legendary rockers. Mercury, their iconic frontman, died in 1991. Drummer Roger Taylor is organizing the event, which will see selected singers taking stages across North America to pay tribute to the band.

While voting doesn't start until Nov. 14, Martel has already emerged a landslide favourite.

"If Marc Martel doesn't win," tweets Nick Seaman, "It will be a travesty."

The performance itself couldn't seem less contrived, except, perhaps, for the 'dirty moustache' Martel cultivated for the audition -- a nod to the iconic Queen frontman who died in 1991.

Martel distills the song to its bare essence, a no-frills performance anchored by a voice that's almost eerily Mercuryesque.

"I thought lyrically, that song is so perfect for right now," he told the Wall Street Journal. "It’s just a guy crying out that he’s tired and can’t get ahead, and most people in America can relate to that…I know I can."

While their vocal styles bear an uncanny similarity, Martel doesn't seem to share much else in common with his unlikely muse.

A consummate showman with a penchant for on-stage spectacle, Mercury was born in Zanzibar as Farrokh Bulsara. While he had dated women, Mercury was known to be bisexual.

Martel's band, Downhere, was formed at a bible college in Saskatchewan -- a Gospel and Christian rock outfit that would subsequently earn three Juno awards. The band has since moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

"Our music may come from a biblical standpoint but we don’t shy away from true experiences – doubt, loss, pain, sorrow – we want to deal with all of that," Martel told the WSJ. "Queen’s repertoire deals with those emotions and feelings too and I love singing their music because at the end of the day, it’s just true.”

He also seems to be loving the sudden catapult to internet stardom.

"I'm not gonna lie," he tweeted Thursday. "This is really fun to watch. Thanks everyone!"

Later that day, he added, "Just broke half a million views, so I think I'll peel myself away from the computer for an hour and have dinner with my wife :)"

For all you fools pretending to be audiophiles that are acting that this guys voice is anything less than phenomenal, and isn't incredibly close to Freddies, jog on! There is only one Freddie, but dang, this guys got pipes, admitting that takes nothing away from the legend.

I disagree, Freddie - a trained opera singer - had a much more powerful voice and could project amazingly. Watch his live performances.

Well for all the naysayers out there who love what queen brought to music and the emotions that come with it, Freddie will never be forgotten, too unique to forget. But I have heard singers like George Micheal or Paul Rogers fill in, Martel is by far, tonally the closest yet I have heard.
But ears are like fingerprints no two are the same.... Just my 2 bits worth..GO MARTEL!

He's good.

Too bad Martel belongs to a group that would condemn Freddy Mercury as sinful and an abomination. He shouldn't be ALLOWED to sing Queen.

How do you KNOW that? You know what, you don't, not all who have Christianity as a part of there life see it the same way....

A big AMEN to that. I'm a Christian, and I know of many traditional churches in Chicago that are LGBT-inclusive.

Next time you talk about Christianity, please learn something besides the stereotypical hogwash first.

He is at the 2.5m marker now; good for him.

It would be so cool to see him perform with Queen all decked out Freddie ware! =p I might have a flashback or two to my slightly misguided youth seeing such a thing.

The best way to listen to someone impersonating someone else is to close your eyes. If they sound just right then that's perfection. Don't let the face or the body distract you. Just close your eyes and listen. Marc is very, very good, IMO. I think he will probably put more energy into his singing when he has an audience. I hope he wins.

I remember listening to Queen's A night at the Opera when it was first released back in 75 or 76. It was a radio debut and magic 92 from Rochester NY had made a big deal about playing the whole A side live on the radio with no commercial breaks. They did just that. When the A side was finnished they just flipped it over and played the whole B side without commercial interuption. I can remember laying in bed listening to this incredible album as my whole perspective on rock and roll was turned upside down.
God how I miss the radio.

What's wrong with the musicians and movie makers these days. We enjoyed Freddie and Queen back in the day but why do we need somebody to come along and mimic his voice? Especially some Christian Rock band - Freddie would roll in over in his grave about that - no doubt. Why all these remakes the movie industry is constantly coming out with? Have we lost our ability to create something new and fresh?

Freddie like Johnny Cash had unique voices in that they could communicate all emotions with passion seemingly effortlessly and when they tried, they could touch people souls. That is why we need singers like them and not some prefab fashion iconoclastic paper & plastic people with a mic. So if "new" can give me that then fine but if it cant then I'll take the next thing which is a new Freddie or Johnny Cash. =]

I can't believe some people are complaining about Martel's "lack of passion" in his singing. If he was outfitted in spandex while full-out showboating in his tiny apartment, people would moan that he was just a cartoonish impersonator.

The fact that Martel has perfect pitch and effortlessly breezes through the song without even breaking a sweat - THAT is amazing. Imagine how this guy would be if he were in front of thousands of screaming fans on a massive stage?

From one Canadian to another: best of luck to you Marc!

No, it's not a lack of showboating, it's the completely vacant expression on his face. It's a solid impression, but eh.
