Ontario Election: Dalton McGuinty's Liberals Seize Momentum Ahead Of Vote

Dalton Mcguinty Momentum

The Huffington Post Canada   Eric Grenier First Posted: 10/04/11 06:29 AM ET Updated: 10/04/11 09:18 AM ET

With two days remaining before Ontario votes, the Liberals appear to be gaining momentum in the neck-and-neck race.

The polls point to improving Liberal fortunes. As of yesterday, the Liberals led in four of the last nine polls, though in many cases the lead was statistically insignificant. But in the 23 polls that were released before that, stretching back to 2010, the Liberals only led in three.

For an incumbent government run by a relatively unpopular premier gunning for his third consecutive term, the Liberals should be doing much worse. If the desire for change has not sunk McGuinty after four weeks of campaigning, it is unlikely to spring up in the last few days.

The Liberals have also received high-profile endorsements from the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail, along with a spate of endorsements from several regional newspapers. The importance of the endorsements by the Star and Globe are compounded by the fact the newspapers endorsed the New Democrats and Conservatives, respectively, in the most recent federal election.

Though the Progressive Conservatives have picked up the endorsement of the National Post, the snub by the reliably conservative Sun Media network is a strong indication of how lacklustre Hudak’s campaign has been.

Whether endorsements have a serious influence on the public's voting intentions or not is arguable, but they do seem to capture the feelings of the electorate.

Election results outside the province might also point toward troubled waters for the Tories. Prince Edward Island elected a strong Liberal majority government last night, while Manitobans may hand the New Democrats a fourth consecutive mandate tonight. Though the Liberals are expected to have a poor showing in Manitoba, the defeat of the Progressive Conservatives may add one more nail in the coffin for provincial Tories.

However, if Progressive Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen somehow does pull off a win in Manitoba, it might just be the bit of good news Tim Hudak needs. On the other hand, the perception that too many provincial and municipal governments are becoming aligned with the federal Conservatives may also affect voters' decisions.

Such a close race leaves a lot of uncertainty. Will each of the parties manage to get out their vote? Will the New Democrats maintain their current high levels of support and, if so, will they split the vote in some of the tight races in suburban Toronto? Who will benefit if an uneventful campaign leads to low voter turnout?

Thursday night might deliver a minority or a majority, a PC government or the re-election of the McGuinty Liberals. The only thing we can know for sure is that it's going to be a long night.

The Globe And Mail - McGuinty

The Globe's endorsement frames McGuinty as the moderate and experienced choice in tough economic times. While it praises Hudak's "basically sound political and economic principles," it faults him for spending the campaign criticizing McGuinty rather than outlining his vision for Ontario's future. The editorial completely discounts the NDP, arguing their "dangerously flawed" ideas could seriously damage Ontario's economy if the party is given a chance to influence policy either in government or within a minority. Choosing Hudak was the same mistake relived when the party chose Frank Miller over an impressive list of other candidates. If the polls are fulfilled, the Tories snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with that decision

From Confederation (1867) thru the 1st McQuinty Gov't in 2003 (144 years), Ontario accumulated a Provincial public debt of approx $110B.
In less than 8 years, McQuinty has doubled that debt while still increasing taxes at an unprecedented rate and is still running annual budget deficits.
And his election campaign promises will only accelerate the increase in deficits and debt.
And yet, Ontarians are set to give him another 4 -5 years to stay on the same track..
I don't get it, but Ontarians must be hell bent on becoming Grecians.

No, that's apathy.

I'm taking bets on what year the Ontario deficit eclipses the Canadian deficit on a per capita basis. I'm saying 2013.

It won't, not with the fiscal conservative behind Ontraio's $6B deficit now running the Country's books as reform party finance minister of year.

If I remembrr correctly it was Hudak who put forth the most expensive budget and even at that never had an independent professional verify the party's numbers.

So my question is who would you have us vote for? The Freedom Party?

Oh, yeah, Timmie, to model yourself after the American rightwing, as you clearly have, is just plain stupid given how despised they are in the majority of American opinion polls.

I hate to say I agree with the Globe, but, my opinion of Tim Hudak is he's a whiner. As to the NDP, having read Andrea's platform (psst, Jack Layton's dead) I can't say I'm in disagreement with it, as I failed to gleen any specifics in it.

Mr. Mcguinty has commented that Ontario is second only to California in North America.
Really ???
Mmmm, Let us see : California is almost Broke. The infrastucuture is in disrepair. California
has 12 % unemployment. Welfare has skyrocketed, Crime is climbing steadily. Drugs and Guns
are everywhere, illegal immigrants are increasing and Northern California wants to seperate
from Southern California.
Wow , Mr. Mcguinty, second from collapse that is quite the accomplishment.
Does Northern Ontario still want to seperate from Southern Ontario ???
And what about Eastern Ontario, my understanding is that they are not happy either !!!
Quite the second place finish you have going there in Ontario.
I could go on for a few chapters but I think you get the point !

It seems Ontarians have decided they don't want the conservative dreamed of "hat trick" and want a non-conservative government to provide check and balance to a Conservative national government and a conservative Mayor of Toronto.

They may not "like" Dalton McGuinty or the Liberals, but they find total conservative rule even more distasteful.

What McGuintyites don't realize is that with our fiscal situation, cutting AND raising taxes is going to be an inevitably. Hudak may do the cutting sooner, but it's only a matter of time before Dolton's irresponsible spending is no longer sustainable

Considering his lead in the polls a month ago, this election has been Hudak's to lose all along.
IMO, the 'Harper Government' and Rob Ford's declining number have shown that we Canadians are essentially a liberal people and find US-style divisive tea-party politics offensive.
11:55 AM on 10/04/2011
Bribing employers to hire immigrants isn't divisive?

Actually, it is an ingenious idea when you think about it.
Instead of Hudak giving a blank cheque to corporate Ontario IN THE HOPES of creating jobs (As we have seen in the US), Dalton is putting a price tag on it.
Hire and you get the money.
Hudak's idea is still bribery. The problem is those he can bribe are more apt to walk away with just the money .

Right wing strategy.......

You know us from before and how bad we were.
This time around we are using American Republican ad tactics
which should make us brand new in your eyes.
Think of what we did to you before and then add the steroids.
