Canada Income Inequality: Which Provinces Have The Widest Income Gap?

Prince Edward Island

When it comes to the income inequality, Canada's provinces are, well, unequal.

The Huffington Post Canada has crunched StatsCan's numbers to provide a picture of how the provinces are faring when it comes to Canada's growing wage gap.

On the inequality rankings, the winner -- or loser, depending on how you look at it -- is British Columbia.

The westernmost province's Gini coefficient -- a measure of income inequality -- was 0.436 in 2009, making it comparable in terms of income distribution to Hong Kong, Thailand or the United States.

At the other end of the spectrum is Prince Edward Island. The Maritime province's Gini coefficient in 2009 stood at 0.365, comparable to Great Britain or Italy.

P.E.I. is also unique in that it's the only province to have seen a decline in income inequality over the past 30 years. Though the income gap has changed unevenly across the country over the years, all remaining nine provinces have seen their gaps grow.

However even P.E.I. had great income disparity than a majority of European countries, whose Gini coefficients generally range between 0.25 and 0.35.

The Gini coefficient measures income inequality on a range between 0 and 1, with 0 being perfect equality and 1 being an economy where all income goes to one person.

For a more realistic picture the author should have used the "after tax" gini coefficient instead of total income gini coefficient.

Let me see if I got this correct.
P.E.I. is the most equal when it comes to income equality.
And that (according to the gospel of the left and liberalism) is a good thing.
But P.E.I. has the lowest per capita GDP and lowest per capita income of any province in Canada.
So I guess the rest of Canada should follow P.E.I.'s lead?

Interesting how the big jump in BC happened during the 1990-01 NDP regime! No wonder they were wiped out in the 2001 election. The zero inflation plan madness of the latter Mulroney years wreaked havoc all over the country and the numbers show that too.

Welfare bums like the weather in BC, lots of them moved there after Ralph bought them bus tickets.

HP sure likes whipping up the hate over the supposed inequalities, let's remember who whipped it up when the violent lefties start spilling blood.

How about the Washington sniper?

Etc etc etc.

Yes, well it makes sense. BC has much higher wages, whereas us, on PEI, have some of the lowest wages and lowest living costs in Canada. Same with the rest of the Maritimes, but PEI is really low.

I think you're getting it wrong. Richer societies have larger income gaps, and here's why

Larry makes 500$ a day, buys loaf of bread for 0.5% of salary
Gary makes 50$ a day, loaf of bread costs him 5% of salary

Assuming equal living costs, the disparity will grow greater (i.e. get worst) in richer provinces, since many people pay the same price for many things.

Thats what I said... I just said that it makes sense that the maritimes and the rest of Canada have a lower gap...
