Kyoto Protocol: Peter Kent's 1984 CBC Climate Change Documentary Used In Protest

First Posted: 12/09/11 04:51 PM ET Updated: 12/09/11 04:51 PM ET

Environment Minster Peter Kent has been voicing the Conservatives' plan to exit the Kyoto Protocol at the Durban climate talks, but he was striking a somewhat different tone back in 1984.

Back then Kent was working at the CBC, where he anchored a documentary on climate change called "The Greenhouse Effect."

In it he calls global warming “the greatest threat to life on the planet” and warns that the devastating effects of climate change “will be seen in our children’s lifetime.”

The documentary is getting renewed attention because of a protest staged by the Council of Canadians outside Kent's constituency office on Friday to coincide with the end of the Durban talks.

The group projected the documentary on the exterior of the building in order to "remind him (Kent) with his own words from 28 years ago about the consequences of protecting oil company profits instead of protecting the planet," said Mark Calzavara, an organizer with the Council of Canadians.

The group is upset about the stance Canada has taken at Durban. "Minister Kent said he was going to South Africa to defend the tar sands and he is doing that in his position on Kyoto which is paving the way for a weak international agreement on climate change,” says Mark Calzavara, referring to the government's decision not to renew Canada's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol when the current deal expires at the end of 2012.

Kent changed his tone slightly on Thursday, saying he would like to see a new climate deal by 2015.

The expression of openness to a Kyoto replacement came on the same day that the feds gave the green light to the controversial Joslyn oil sands project. Work can now begin on the $9 billion mine 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alta.

Just like any typical capitalist water carrier , Peter Kent's opinion could be bought and changed by the highest bidder.

I look at what this government is doing to my country both within our borders and our reputation around the world. I don't feel like it is my country anymore, I don't feel represented by my government in fact I feel that the Harper government (the proper name for it because it is most certainly not the Canadian Government) is a group of power hunger demigods who will stop at nothing to push their ideology on the Canadian people. I can only wonder if this is how the good people of Germany felt when the Nazi party took over and set their country on the path of destruction with total disregard for the rights of it's citizens (all of them) and the letter of the law. I am disgusted appalled and frightened by what the next four years has in store for us. I can only hope Canadians will wake up and that the backlash will be effective and not too late to save this once great forward thinking country that I love.

When I lived in the UK we had to purchase a tax disc on our cars, the price of the disc was determined by the size of your engine. I do not like any more taxes I hate them I am not socialist but I do agree with this, if you are going to drive a gas guzzler then you pay, the problem is here in Canada Automotive Unions would be up in arms. Since more people would be buying more efficient vehicles in order to avoid the higher tax disc. If the left say make the rich pay well if you want to drive the big 5.0 Litre engine then you pay simple, it will not save the planet but it might make people change their minds on many things when you hit them in the pocket book

I have stan, but what really concerns me is this steam rolling of getting this resourse to market. I truly understand the economics behind it too, but at what cost. The way this government wants to go full steam ahead is just mind boggling, let alone giving it to foriegn corporations to mine also. I do try to educate my self on the issues.

Kent is an over-coiffed little yes-man with no credentials other than he once read the news. Sadly, he typifies the Harper cabinet which is largely made up of people with no other qualifications than their blind loyalty to the Supreme Leader.

I worked with Peter at Global TV. He was a spoiled little boy then and still is. Grow up

He had seemed to be a credible person, all up until he joined the CPC. Ever since then, he has proved over and over how much of a shill he really is. You can see the struggle in the eyes. Why does he continue? He's just a pitiful figure now.

As I said once before... what is left of the worlds diminishing 'ozone layer' can be found between this Minister's ears.

He knows better. However right now he is the PM's "boy" so he has to read the lines on the briefing book notes and keep quite. The two faces of politicos, it's a wonder they can live with themselves.

That the IPCC has been lying to us?
That the AGW is a political movement, not a science based issue, that computer models are a joke, that there is much more satellite data available,

25 years has passed, don't you think a bit has been learned in that time?

And herein lyeth the lesson. Carefull what you promote, people may actually hold you accountable for it. On the other hand, tends to prove not all people at the CBC are starry eyed lefties. Wait a minute, maybe it just tells us they can't be trusted to actually say what they believe in and stick to it. God, I'm so confused!
