Don Cherry can't get a break (or is it that Canadians can’t get a break from Don Cherry?) Either way, Canada’s ‘patron saint’ of hockey is under fire from all corners.

Children’s singer Raffi recently urged his 3,800 Twitter followers to mute Coach’s Corner, accusing Cherry of being a personality who “sounds and acts like a bully.”

Cherry was angered to learn a fake quote attributed to him was included in a list of the year’s most memorable quotes by The Canadian Press (CP apologized).

And Cherry himself had to apologize for comments he made in October about a group of retired NHL enforcers.

Which makes Grapes ripe for the picking by Ron James, who takes a swipe at Cherry and his sartorial choices on the Ron James Show: New Year’s Edition, which airs on CBC TV Jan. 1 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

“Geez, you never know what he’s going to say any more do you? He’s like a nutty uncle mowing the lawn in his underwear, isn’t he?,” James says.

As for Cherry’s wild suits, James notes, “Liberace on acid couldn’t dream up those fashion nightmares.”

It's pretty hard to justify head shots, or anything that might damage the brain. But don't confuse concussions, head shots, or cheap shots with fighting. It could be argued that few things are less dangerous than a hockey fight. The crowd loves it, and little harm is done.

James is just doing his comedy gig. Cherry is doing his Coaches Corner gig. Cherry's spot on cbc is the most popular drawing cbc has.

Mr. Cherry is a NHL 'has been' that has never been. He is getting too much air time.

I am sure that he is a good man, though. Unfortunately, his 'rock'em, hit'em' approach to hockey has too many believers. This explains why since 15 years to the NHL is dominated by European players.

Don Cherry is what's wrong with Canadian hockey.

dominated by european players? are you freakin serious? look at the percentages before you say that bull&*#*. Don cherry knows hockey, hockey is a physical sport, thats why he comes off as a toughnosed analyst. It sounds like you are whats wrong with canadian hockey.

I recognise the name Don Cherry but not this James person spewing inanities about him. He looks a lot like the guy who sweeps out the washrooms at the local bus depot but apparently lacks his wit.

Cherry is an anachronism whose buffoonery lends itself to ridicule. While his remarks and antics may appeal to the "Timmies" crowd, thinking hockey fans are looking forward to his retirement.

No, Richard is merely pointing out the difference in what appeals to people with IQs over and under room temperature. Anyone who finds Cherry worth listening to (let alone watching) is several bricks short of a full load.

Fan is short for fanatical.The "crowd" you refer to are raising the players you idolize. Try thinking deeper.
He is actually one of the hockey guys who "gets it" and has influenced the games rules in a positive way. As a non-fanatic but educated devotee (I also think) of the game (and multi decade coach, parent and still player), I always smell ignorance in name callers. BTW Timmies is hot and comforting affordable (and open early on a cold morning) heading to a rink with sleepy kids who have dreams of playing for you thinkers.
