Air Miles 5-Year Expiry: Plan To Limit Time To Redeem Points Has Some Consumers Upset

Air Miles Expiry 5 Years

The Huffington Post Canada   First Posted: 12/30/11 01:35 PM ET Updated: 12/30/11 03:01 PM ET

As of New Year's Eve, Air Miles collectors will have exactly five years to use their existing miles before they expire, a change that has some members of the reward program upset.

All Air Miles accrued by tomorrow will have to be redeemed by December 31, 2016, or they will disappear. All miles collected past tomorrow will also face a five-year limit.

The move, announced this week by the reward program, has prompted a backlash from consumers on the Air Miles Facebook page, with many complaining it takes them long enough as it is to collect the miles they need.

"I guess the dream of flying to Europe with my wife using Air Miles is just a dream," one commenter wrote on Facebook.

"We chose Air Miles over Aeroplan and other such points collector cards for the simple fact that air miles didn't expire," wrote another commenter. "I will be cancelling my Air Miles Mastercard..."

Air Miles collectors gather miles by making qualified purchases from the program's participating sponsors. Until now, the miles — redeemable for eligible merchandise, including electronic goods, plane tickets and vacation packages — never carried an expiration date.

Neil Everett, chief marketing officer for Air Miles, told the Huffington Post part of the company's reason for making the change came from its need to better predict its finances.

"We are a publicly traded company, and publicly traded companies have come under a lot of scrutiny," he said. "We need a better ability to to forecast redemption."

Everett noted that the average time to redeem miles on a card is two-and-a-half years, meaning that "the vast majority of collectors will not be impacted by this."

To those who will be impacted, Everett suggested they may be able to speed up their collection of miles by maximizing their use of the Air Miles card.

"My question to them would be: Are you really leveraging the program the best way you can?" he asked.

The changes come on the heels of a new instant-redemption feature called Air Miles Cash.

The program, which begins in March, will allow collectors to instantly cash in their miles at participating retailers, using them towards purchases for items like gas and groceries.

Under the new program, 95 reward miles will earn collectors $10 off while cashing out their purchases. Collectors will be able to redeem in $10 increments up to a maximum of $200 per day, including taxes.

Everett said there are 14 million active Air Miles cards in Canada, with 10 million of them being used at least once a month. He said the program in the past year handed out some $500 million in Air Miles rewards.

Air Miles is becoming just like all the rest. Each year, there was a hefty inflation increase in the number of miles required to redeem. By introducing the cash feature, they again increased the number of miles you need to redeem compared to previous gift card options. But the saddest thing is the excuse offered - that as a publicly traded company they need to be able to predict usage. If after 20 years they cannot do that, they are pretty lame. Furthermore, insurance companies have, for hundreds of years, been predicting when we would die to determine insurance premiums. With much more information, surely airmiles can construct a model to predict usage - financial markets do not expect perfection - just reasonable accuracy.

Airmiles = $ . I say the excuse given for this expiration plan is not the main one . The $ I'm saving now is for the future and not to be all spent within 5 years . I find it sad to hear such an excuse when we are living in a high tech world .

(to better predict its finances.)

I've got almost 20,000 airmiles. I could buy a fridge.

Face it. They need you more than you need them. Give them the Bank of America / GoDaddy treatment. If you don't have a lot of points, cancel !!!!! Watch how fast they change their tune.
There'll be an announcement in no time stating: "We're listening to our customers, etc"

ICYDK: You as an Air Miles cardholder are not the customer. You are their supplier (of data).
They compensate you with a pittance of relatively worthless "miles" in exchange for a record of every thing you buy with the card.

You were being duped under the old system, now you are being duped even more.

It's time prices drop and all these "Reward" programs be abolished.

The only reason that I hang onto my Air Miles card is that whenever I buy anything at an Air MIles vendor, I am paying extra for Air Miles whether I get them or not so I'd rather get them. It's taken me about five years to get a return trip to Winnipeg -hooray Winnipeg.

Sounds like my best strategy would be to shop at a non Air Miles vendor. I hear that Husky credits your BCAA membership. Now if only I could afford to buy gas.

I would like to hear about more alternatives to Air Miles.

re: point expiration. "Most loyalty programs in Canada and around the world already have an expiry policy of some kind (some expire accounts, while others expire points)." Which is precisely the reason I choose Air Miles sponsors over other providers. My loyalty to all plans that instituted point expiry ended. Air Miles decision to rob us because others get away with it is truly disappointing. For years I have brandished Air Miles as as an example to all who would offer me 'indian giver' points. My ability to save for a ten or twenty thousand point vacation is now officially over. Thanks for killing my dream. Please do not think of responding with a smug 'just buy more stuff faster' comment. It is fitting this news arrives at xmas time. It lets us all remember Ebeneezer and the Grinch. It is likely that more of my purchases now may be based on who offers the lowest price or is more convenient rather than who offers Air Miles

Air miles screws people who have been loyal...

Bye Air miles....I will redeem my points and rip up my card and please rest assured word of mouth by all of us will bring your company down due to huge lost of credibility.

Air miles run by a bunch of greedy jerks.

I already went through this bunkum with AeroPlan a few years ago. I changed specifically to AirMiles because they did not have term limits in place. Think they even advertised that they didn't at the time. So I will continue to hold the card until I expend all our points and then opt out of the rewards program game completely. AirMiles does not care about the loyalty of their cardholders. They only car abouth themselves.

This is breach of contract. You cannot unilaterally alter your agreement to suit yourself. There should be a class action against these people to get them to follow the rules. They could, of course, alter the rules for future use but they cannot retroactively take away what has been promised and paid for. At the very least the consumer bureau should hold these people accountable.

We're a publicly traded company. We need to deliver shareholder value by screwing our consumers at a level befitting a publicly traded company.

It really isn't possible to do much with Air Miles. Casual users would take eons of time to accumulate enough points to do anything. The everyday flyer certainly could benefit from accumulated points but then you might as well chose an airline. People don't realize that at the store say Rona, how much would you have to buy before you could go somewhere decent. Air Miles simpy wants to clean up their data base from dormant accounts and small accounts. Time to cash in.

So much for air miles. They are a ripmoff anyway The miles you get don't even cover the difference in price with competing products. Buy the competitor, save the money, cancel your air miles card and fly just as cheap.
