Conservative Fundraising: Lead On Other Canadian Parties Narrows

Conservative Fundraising Canada

The Conservatives remain Canada’s best funded political party, but for the first time in five years they are no longer taking in most of Canada’s political donations.

Financial reports posted on the Elections Canada website this week show that the Conservatives raised $4.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2011. While this was more than any other party, it was the worst fourth quarter result since before Stephen Harper became prime minister. Nevertheless, the Conservatives raised more than twice as much money as their next closest competitor.

The Liberals, despite their poor showing in the May election and their third place standing in the House of Commons, managed to raise $2.8 million in the fourth quarter, their best end-of-year result since 2006.

The New Democrats pulled in $1.6 million. Though that was their worst fourth quarter result since 2007, they had the most individual contributors since 2005.

The Greens raised $383,000 while the Bloc Québécois doubled their third quarter intake by raising $162,000. That is still well below what the Bloc raised in past fourth quarters, and less than half what they raised at the end of 2010.

At the Liberal biennial convention in Ottawa last month, the party spoke about the need to close the fundraising gap with the Conservatives. For several years now, the Tories have managed to outpace their rivals by millions of dollars and have often raised almost as much or more than all the other major parties combined. Though the Conservatives still hold a significant edge, the Liberals appear to be working toward closing that gap.

The fourth quarter of 2011 was the first since 2006 in which the Conservatives did not raise more than half of all money donated to the five main political parties. In the fourth quarter of 2010, for example, the Conservatives raised $5.2 million or 52 per cent of all money raised by the other parties in the last three months of that year. In 2008, they managed to raise $6.3 million or 57 per cent.

But in the last quarter of 2011, the Conservatives raised 45 per cent of all the money donated to political parties. The Liberals raised 31 per cent, by far their best result in the last five years. In the fourth quarters between 2007 and 2010, the Liberals never raised more than 23 per cent of the total.

With the next election more than three years away, the Conservatives may have simply scaled back the amount of fundraising compared to when they were ruling with a minority and another election was always around the corner. But the last three Tory election wins were helped along by the party’s ability to outspend adversaries between campaigns. If the fundraising gap that oiled the Conservative machine is reduced or disappears, the string of Harper victories may come to an end.

For anyone not clear on exactly who Stephen Harper is and what his cadre of tiny-tea-party-tories are all about …

You always know when the reformers are getting low on money. Suddenly things start to slip out like 'right to life", "death penalty", "tuff on crime" and the gift that keeps on giving "gun registry". Any mention of one of these has the Harper Reformers lining up to empty their pockets for the cause. Stevie loves inflaming his base of religious zealots, science deniers and bunker builders.
What a silly bunch.

Progressives think 'We' while cons think "Me"
02:57 PM on 02/03/2012
The cons on this thread citing campaign finance regulations in Canada, always neglect to acknowledge the harpe(R) regimes patronizing of Sun as it's sleazy propaganda wing and the unrelenting barrage of negative ads throughout the Iggy years in order to fulfill their wet dream of a majority government.

Corporations do contribute in excess of campaign regulations, the cons are just better at disguising it as "news".

The liberals promised to increase the CBC funding, how do you suppose that affects the coverage they get from the CBC?

The Conservatives have been proven to be corrupt and incompetent, why do you think the media shouldn't criticize that?
12:56 PM on 02/09/2012
CBC funding was cut under the Martin Liberals CanadaStan. And under the Cons. If there was any bias it would be pro-NDP. but frankly I think it's in the eye of the beholder.

BTW, CBC funding should be increased as for all other public broadcasters outside the USA.

Liberals will never learn. Going corporate got them a shellacking at the last election, doing so again, will certainly work....

This is good news on one level - the less money the Conservatives bring in the less they will have to spend on American style negative advertising. What would really be heartening would be to hear that CDNs demand that our political parties get back to doing what they were hired to do - develop our country to the benefit of the citizens NOT the benefit of the Corporations that fund the political parties.
The problem with our democratic system is that we have allowed it to become a "Government for Sale" to the highest bidder (contributor) - unfortunately we are becoming just as complacent about this as our counter parts in the US. No political party in power would do it but we should invoke "cast in stone" limits as to how much each party can spend to get elected and make sure that it is adhered to - allowing endless spending may seem democratic but in reality it is just allows political parties to "buy" the election.
In fact what we have now is a political party that is trying to remove the party funding that Canada contributes to ALL parties in a blatant attempt to make sure that their competitors HAVE LESS MONEY to spend - and we knew this when we elected them!!!

Get tired hearing this kind of nonsense. No companies can donate money to Canadian political parties. Only individuals. Got that. Now try to remember it!
12:03 PM on 02/03/2012
Just because the rule states they can't directly donate money that they don't have ways around this. Do you really believe that corporations can't "sponsor" discussions, meetings etc that make the governing party look good? Of course they can and do. How about expenses - you think that maybe some of the expenses might be picked up by individuals that are being reimbursed by corporations? On top of that the US is considering allowing corporate donations to political parties - how long before our American PM disguised as a CDN tries to implement this in Canada? There are many ways for corporations to fund political parties - disallowing direct donations is just a smoke screen.
If you are following the US election you can clearly see that the Conservatives have modelled their campaigning after the Republicans - and both parties are totally controlled by big business. Why else would the Conservatives take us out of Kyoto and completely support that ecological disaster called the Tar Sands to continue to pollute the planet - 3 barrels of water are used for each barrel of oil recovered - only Corporate greed could possible justify polluting natural resources that way. You won't convince many of us that the Conservatives did this for the benefit of the individual contributor!

Are you still here? I thought this was a "non story". And now you are "tired" of hearing "nonsense". Complain much? Isn't there a hockey game on somewhere you can watch?
06:58 PM on 02/03/2012
You and I know this, but conservatives, esp. Albertans, live in another world. An 'American" world of Big Box stores, double laned main-streets lined with 'oil money', McD's, Burger Kings and the such. Walmart is their 'dream store' and 'Made in Canada' means nothing to them.. $$$ talks, BS walks !!! Canadian culture, they haven't a clue, they vote conservative and would be happy to be the 52nd state. We're in big trouble, and these guys are only make it worse, God help us !
07:31 AM on 02/04/2012
Sadly we have already become just another part of the US as most CDN's are only interested in US media, lifestyle etc. Our identity is slowly being eroded by the fact that we refuse to invest in ourselves, our culture and our values which up until recently were not being driven primarily by fear and greed. I wish that more people would take the time to do some research into what is/has really been going on in the world. There are some terrific documentaries out there like XXI Century which is truly a wake up call for anyone that wants to "really" know how we got here - and here is only getting more controlled by the US media. If you are interested you can find a couple of great ones on Netflix including one on the Tar Sands - but don't miss XXI Century - if you thought you knew what has been going on you are about to get your eyes opened - and then Harper and the boys will make so much more sense - sadly.
