The Best National Anthem: O Canada Beats Out US, UK

Best National Anthem

Right on the heels of National Flag Day, Canadians get confirmation of what we've always believed -- our national anthem is among the best.

At least, according to a new study commissioned by Sing-a-long-a Productions, the folks who put on such family-friendly fare as "Sing-A-Long-A Grease" (playing next weekend in Toronto) and "Sing-A-Long-A Sound Of Music."

Not a subject to be approached casually, the data was pulled together by the University of London's Dr. Alison Pawley, a musicologist and singing teacher, and Dr. Daniel Müllensiefen, a music psychologist, who analyzed eight national anthems to determine which ones most compelled listeners to join in.

While their list appears slightly skewed toward UK and European culture, with France's "La Marseillaise" and Wales' "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau/Land of My Fathers" taking the top two spots, "O Canada" lands squarely in the middle at number five, above both "The Star-Spangled Banner" (number six) and "God Save The Queen" (number seven).

"O Canada" had many versions during the country's evolution, but the one that's being lauded for its "sing-a-long-ability" came from a French poem written by Judge Adolphe-Basile Routhier and set to music by Calixa Lavallée in 1880. An English version was crafted by Montreal lawyer, Robert Stanley Weir, in 1908, but thanks to legal hold-ups, it wasn't officially made the national anthem until July 1, 1980.

Though "O Canada" has not been without its controversy in recent years, the widespread love for the song is likely thanks to the relative simplicity of its lyrics, the heart-pulling crescendoing of its tune and of course, the option for bilingualism.

The researchers had previously used their methods to figure out what made particular pop songs so catchy, hitting on results like "We are the Champions" and "Y.M.C.A."

In my 'not so humble opinion,' 'America the Beautiful' should be the National Anthem of the United States! But alas, I know all the warmongers would NEVER let that happen!

I can already see my fellow Americans seething that our anthem was not number one, but after I thought about it, and saw that it was not the anthem itself being judged, but the singability of the song that was being judged, I am surprised that we were in the top 10! As memorable as the 'Star Spangled Banner' is, it is one of the most difficult songs to sing, going from notes so low to notes so high, only certain singers, like Whitney, could sing it as it was written. It's terribly difficult. So, remembering that it is not the song, itself, but the ease at which it can be sung, being judged, There is, too, the issue that our anthem has a theme about battle and winning the battle, violence, which many co not like, whereas most do not have war as its these and the permanence of its flag, still waving at the end. Anyway, 'O Canada' is much easier to sing, as is the number 1 song, 'La Marseilles', which is just as memorable as ours. The Welsh song, I do not know. 'God Save the Queen', the UK entry, is easy to sing, with a couple of tough notes and is for a chorale more than a soloist. So, again, before we all get out noses out of joint that we have been dissed, we have not. Just the ease of our anthems is what was being judged.. Peace!

I don't know, I really loved Jimi Hendrix's instrumental version!
And so did everyone in my Battalion, under the age of 30 in 1970!
Over, not so much!
I still play it every now and then!

His version is legendary but it is without vocals, just instrumentals, which is easier, when hitting a high "E" that it is, vocally, which is what that poll was about, the vocals and the ease in singing the song. I have his version of the anthem as every July 4, I am in Europe and I blast it out my windows (amongst some other songs). So, I do agree with you, but instrumentals are not the same as controlling your voice. Only difference. Peace out! Thanks for fighting, too!

In the British colonies around the world we would always stand and sing God Save The Queen at the movie theatre before the cartoons...

Love the anthem but would make one edit: "True patriot love in all of us command" in the interest of accuracy.

When Newfoundland was a country we had our own National Anthem, The Ode to Newfoundland. These two women do it NO justice, and it's not the full version, but this is the best I can find on YouTube.

Although "O Canada" is very singable, it's lyrics tend to be somewhat militaristic and, as a poster above mentioned, lacking an accurate historical perspective. I've had a personal anthem for my country for awhile now.... Northwest Passage by the great, late Stan Rogers. Other tunes that come to mind are "This Land of Ours", "Mon Pays" and the Canadian version of "This Land is your Land"
What to choose for everyone? I guess that "O Canada" fits the bill, but I try to keep the others in mind while I'm singing it.

Sorry about the apostrophe in "its". I'm from Quebec and we've had a problem with apostrophes for a little while now. Still, no excu'se

I always found it a source of interest that I think the UK is one of the only countries out there whose national anthem celebrates their monarch rather than the country itself or their flag.

How insecure is the British Monarchy that they have to have the whole country sing about them every time the national anthem comes up?

I vote we replace "God Save The Queen" with "Land of Hope and Glory" or "Rule Brittannia".

How about we just use the Welsh power-trio Budgie's ode to their country?

As an ex-American who had the good sense to move north, I can tell you unequivocally that O Canada is far more melodic and far easier to sing than the four-octave monster that is the US anthem. And as one who is proud to sport a maple leaf tattoo on his left shoulder, I would place it number one in the world.

Do they have too much time on their hands to commission such a study? As with food, music is a matter of taste. Some prefer this over that. When it comes to the lyrics I always found the anthem slightly ironic in a country why such a high proportion of immigrants. "My home and native land'? Really?
