‘Microsoft Tech Support' Scam Bilks Thousands From Unsuspecting Computer Users

Microsoft Phone Scam

The Huffington Post Canada   First Posted: 02/16/2012 1:42 pm Updated: 02/16/2012 1:48 pm

Police forces across Canada are warning the public about phone scammers claiming to be Microsoft tech support who are bilking unsuspecting people out of hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

It appears to be the latest version of a four-year-old scam in which people received calls from “Microsoft” or “windows” tech support workers telling them their computer would crash if they didn’t hand over control of the computer to “tech support.”

Once the scammers have “fixed” the problem, they charge the computer owner as much as hundreds of dollars.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, the scam is now so common that it accounts for 70 per cent of the complaints made to the bureau.

The scam has recently been seen in North Bay and Lambton, Ontario, and in the British Columbia interior, but is by no means limited to Canada.

Microsoft issued a warning about it last summer, noting that the scam appears to be targeting English-speaking countries including Canada, Ireland, the U.K. and the U.S.

The Seattle-based software company ran its own survey to determine the scam’s extent, and found 15 per cent of respondents in the targeted areas had received a call of this sort. Some three per cent of those contacted fell for the scam.

The amounts of money bilked from computer users ranged greatly, from an average of $82 in Ireland to an average of $1,562 in Canada.

Numerous YouTube users have posted videos claiming to be recordings of the scam.

Noting the scammers’ accents, many have speculated the ruse originates in India.

Microsoft has asked its customers to beware of unsolicited phone calls related to a security problem, and to never hand over personal information to unsolicited callers.

These guys should be easy to catch. They are using a phone for one to call large amounts of people, which has records of origin somewhere. If some foreign phone carrier is being a pain, they're likely going through routers, meaning their ip address and an open connection directly to their computer in deep and lovely ways is already present voluntarily without having to disrupt their "helping" on some dummy machine. Not to mention they are "charging the customer", meaning there are financial records somewhere. So why is law enforcement not stopping them? Is this actually being considered legal, or are the law enforcement agencies just scratching their heads about what to do next?

I have hung up on several of these scamming thief's. Now a bit more patient I listen too their whole spill several times if nothing else to waste their time. If it eliminates a few calls they have time to make all the better.

“Thief’s” should correctly be THIEVES.
“Listen too” should be LISTEN TO.
“Spill” should be SPIEL.

Just thought the busy Grammar Police could use a little help.

I've received a number of these calls last fall. After the first couple of times, I felt no compunction against telling them to go do rude things to themselves (rather loudly, I might add). My brother has also received a number of calls as well (in another city), and more than once they would begin the call by using his name -- there may be more than one operation out there.

I got several of these calls last fall culminating in one where I kept 3 separate "agents" on the phone for close to an hour while I surfed the net on my Mac. I finally told them that if my machine was as infected as they said it was, I was going to throw it out and buy one of those "Apple machines".

I got one last call just after new year and I was so incensed that I cried, "Shame, shame on you! You're only degrading yourself when you cheat other people." He hung up on me. :-)

‘Microsoft Tech Support' - they say they're from Microsoft Tech Support, headline sounds right to me. Although from reading your comment, I'm kinda creeped out to learn there are still Microsoft fanboys. I'll bet you're a master at the 'developer' dance.

I had this call about a month ago. I was suspicious and started asking questions. I got answers by leading the con artist and when I pointed out she had just confirmed a load of BS about my computer, she hung up. It was then I went on line and found that this scam had been in England 2 years ago and the US last year. apparently there are 2 scams, this type with bogus repair and another that opens your computrer to cyber pirates who raid all the financial history on it. I live in the Ottawa area so add Eastern Ont to the scammers efforts.

These people have called our house repeatedly, I suspected that they were scammers right from the beginning. I tell them that we don't have the internet and they still call - I think from a skype number.

I love these guys. I let them do all of the talking, ask them for more information to keep them talking, ask them to re-explain certain things, thank them for their time in helping me keep my computer secure and then hit them with the same line I use on every other scam phone call.

"Alright James, you got me convinced ! I'll take two of the blue ones !" Almost every time, they try to re-explain what it is they're calling about, thinking you're exessively gullible. "Ah okay now I get it, thanks for explaining it James ... in that case, I'll just take one of the red ones". By this time many wise up and hang up, but not all of them, so they continue their shpeal and try to understand what you mean by the red ones and blue ones. By then I'm usually tired of wasting their time and give up "Alright James, I'm tired of all this back and forth, just mail me one of each and I'll send you a cheque in the mail". No scammer has ever kept me on the line past this point.

I LOVE wasting their time, and since they usually call me at work, I just keep working in the background.

I use to feel the exact same way, until one day I realized "why am I, the victim, getting so enrgaged while the nob calling me doesn't feel a thing" ... so I figured I'd start having fun with them, getting them enraged, and even though it's a odd concept, their rage brings me happiness :D

Give it a try next time - I'm almost certain you'll enjoy it. The tough part is not cracking too early and letting them talk and talk and talk, let them think they have you, boy will they talk even more then ! And after you've wasted 10 minutes of their time (I'm assuming these scammers are on some type of comission), start busting out the nonsensical "I'll take the blue one" lines :D
