Quebec Election: PQ Move Past CAQ And Into Lead With Jean Charest's Liberals In New Poll Amid Anger At Harper Government

Quebec Election Pq Caq Charest

The Huffington Post Canada   First Posted: 02/17/2012 10:25 am Updated: 02/17/2012 11:26 am

Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois’s attacks on the Harper government, whose unpopularity in Quebec is matched only by dissatisfaction with Premier Jean Charest, appear to have paid off.

A new poll puts the Parti Québécois neck-and-neck with the governing Liberals. And that means François Legault’s Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) have fallen behind.

A new survey by Léger Marketing released by the Journal de Montréal indicates that the PQ and the Liberals are tied for the lead in voting intentions at 29 per cent apiece. Though the CAQ is not far behind at 28 per cent, this is the first poll since the Coalition’s official launch in November that has not put François Legault’s right-of-centre party at the front of the pack.

It is also the first Léger poll since June 2011 that places the Parti Québécois in a tie for first with Jean Charest’s Liberals.

But with the PQ edging out the CAQ among francophone Quebecers by a margin of 35 per cent to 32 per cent, Pauline Marois has a good chance of becoming the province’s first female premier. With an advantage in this all-important demographic and good numbers outside of the two major centres of Montreal and Quebec City, the PQ could narrowly squeeze out the Liberals to form a minority government with 50 odd seats.

All is not lost for the CAQ, however. Though the party has dropped four points since Léger last reported at the end of January, François Legault is still the favourite for the premier’s job. One-quarter of Quebecers identify Legault as the best person to lead the province, compared to 21 per cent for Jean Charest and 19 per cent for Pauline Marois. However, that last number represents a bump of four points for the PQ leader in only a matter of weeks.

With the CAQ now a flesh-and-blood part like any other, support for the party has dropped. The CAQ has made a few missteps, putting forward policy ideas that cannot help but put off some segments of the population, This is in sharp contrast to a few months ago, after the launch of the Coalition, when the party led in the polls thanks to its novelty and ability to be everything for everyone.

But the CAQ’s pledge to stay out of constitutional affairs and not confront the federal government may be the source of some of its recent problems. The choices made by the Conservatives on the long gun registry, the monarchy and on crime legislation, coupled with the party’s scant representation in the province, have emphasized the distance that exists between Quebec and Ottawa. Both Jean Charest and Pauline Marois have seized the opportunity to speak out against Stephen Harper, putting François Legault on the wrong side of federal-provincial relations.

The battle lines in Quebec are being drawn, as this poll indicates the province is regionally divided between the three parties: the CAQ in and around Quebec City and in the Montreal suburbs, the Liberals in the heart of Montreal and in the Outaouais and the PQ in the rest of the province.

Add the Ottawa-Quebec divide to these regional divisions and the stage is set for a hotly contested spring election -- if Jean Charest decides to go ahead with one. The strong campaigner is certainly well positioned to pull off a victory, but with the PQ gaining and the CAQ still in the game, the nine lives of the wily premier may have run out.

No, I think this is Quebeckers Fed Up with ALL OF THEM and find themselves/ourselves - once again in the Lobster Pot - of having Patry's FORCED upon us NONE OF US WANT!! The problem is - at this stage of the game - the Vast majority of the population - IS NOT ALLOWED to Participate in the political process and hasn't been "allowed" for many decades... as required by "law" - but hey - "required by law" does Not apply to QC Legislators or their pals. That only applies to 'the little people' - even if those laws are illegal - enacted by a pile of (imho) lunatics!! I mean look at this Media Hyped - non stop Hyped - CAQ. What are they made of? Well: Longstanding Separatist & ADQ - MNA's who 'know' they're not going to get reelected. So how do they keep their lifelong 'cushy paychecks and perks'? They freaking start a supposed "We're going to save Quebec" - "New (sic) Party and with a 'billionaire backing them financially - they're all over the media as the 'good guys'. And we all know Quebec/National Media - follows the "Dictates of Their Masters" like Peladeau and the Politicians! Thank GOD for the Huff Posts - where "What Quebeckers REALLY WANT" will finally be freaking heard!

29-29-28 is a tie... hardly a win for separatists as HP states. This means that the PQ, Liberals and the CAQ each get a third of the votes. And voting PQ has never meant a vote for independance.

Whoever writes on Quebec has no understanding of Quebecers.

Provincial elections in Quebec have typically given us the choice between only two parties, Liberals and PQ. So Quebecers alternate between electing the two. What other choice is there? We all know that the PQ won't go into another referedendum because they will lose it. They always talk about waiting for the right conditions. All they want is to stay in power.

The real test of independence is asking Quebecers point blank if they want to separate. Even though it came close, survey after survey shows that this option is losing ground. With immigration increasing, the independence of Quebec is less and less a possibility. People who immigrate often do so because their own country was in turmoil and the last thing they want is political instability.

More recently, we've seen other parties split the vote (ADQ now defunct, the recent Quebec solidaire very left-wing and this year, the CAQ with Francois Legault). I believe that, just like this survey shows, we're going to see minority governments from now on. I have voted for the PQ in the past, when Bouchard was head of the party. I voted for the man and his vision. I'm not the only one who votes this way. Most Quebecers have voted for both parties. The die-hard independendists are in the 30% range but the PQ has been elected with a majority of votes in the past. We know that we can always say NO when the times comes.

What for 40 Years!!! Go, go, go already. We don't want you to stay and haven't for decades! BTW - The Federalist areas of the Province - will 100% be Staying In Canada and the 'illegally enacted - illegal Public Laws enacted by Provincial legislators (violating our Constitutions "Statutes Of Law Making Regulations",) are very soon going to be Abolished - now that social media like Huff Post - allow the voices of the people to be heard.

I've had enough of the Harper government. Count one more separatist.
04:32 AM on 02/18/2012
And maybe a few more as well- seems as regular as clockwork Quebec starts the separation bit, so you want to separate? fair enough, call for the vote.
Only this time lets hold the vote in every province- the other 9 provinces voting to see if the rest of Canada wants to keep Quebec.

As a matter of "fact" - you are spot on tired Canadian; from a legal point of view. The Separation of any Province (or any Public Law) according to our Constitutions Law making regulations - and Dion's finally addressing it and the Supreme Court and of course International Law etc... make it uber clear: Quebec "belongs to the people of Canada - just like the other 9 provinces belong to the people of Quebec as well. And it is the People Of Canada that VOTE on the matter - Period. The 'never ending referendums' and threats thereof - have been a HUGE PILE OF BULL. They NEVER posed the question on Quebec separating in the first place! The question they asked - was "If they could Ask the question on whether Quebeckers wanted to "ask to Separate"!! Of course Quebecker have REPEATEDLY SAID and Voted NO.. but hey - that hasn't stopped our politicos and ridiculous Media from running with it - all these years. And doing it quite well - I must say. Our strings have been yanked - for 40 years now - all based on a pile of total Bull. You know - the old "Divide & Conquer" game.

Bonjour,

Our cities are corrupted, without room for everyone, but parasites. Our countries are spoiled, and left as dead. We are on our knees. We are hungry. We have nothing. Nothing to lose anymore.

The worst could be that anyone out of our council decides to speak in our place to the federation. Exit Charest, exit Legault, exit any other «economic false prophet».

Regards,
P. T.Simard - Québécois

By the way, some of us think that within Harper's Gvt Ideologies yields the anihilation of all proposals, our culture made to the federation. It's like P.E. Trudeau's balloon exploded «from coast to coast». It sort of complicated things, here. Hope you'll understand.

Excuse me!! I'm a Quebecker and you for sure don't speak for me -or- our 2.5 million English speaking community, mon ami. Hope you understand 'that'!
09:27 PM on 02/18/2012
Yes of course,

I spoke for me, as a Québécois. Beg your pardon for the «We» emphasize... damned poetry ...

This whole issue is I think a lack of communication, as you mention it. Charest's Liberal needs you, the english community, to pursue its activities. If you reckon that 3/4 of the anglophones vote for Liberals tomorrow morning (about 2 million people, according to your count), will you agree 3/4 of all Québec wont vote for Charest's Crew ? «Once upon a time in 2003, they were ready, ...»

There you mention, 2.5 million English speaking community, somewhat a good representation of the 50 circonscriptions that voted «no» in 95, against the 84 mostly represented by the French community (6 minus 2 million people, at that time, maybe), which with the help of a brand new electoral map, it gives you on «West Islands», an heavier urban counterpart to any political decisions. But here, we partake the same Assemblée Nationale.

Couldn't we agree on something ? Find a gateway to the 21th century ? While we vote on the same day, couldn't we kick out political failures at once ? We are 7 000 000 people in Québec. 125 of us build laws, and speak to the federation.

Regards

Can't stand any of them and haven't for decades and that includes the Federal bunch of career politicos too - who seemingly have no clue on what their 'job descriptions are, either'!! Quebec, once a shining star, now an intellectual and materially in decline.

Please, leave.
08:46 PM on 02/17/2012
I've been saying it for ages.....Quebec peaked in 1967 (centennial year) and has been going down hill since, that's 45 years now. The 70's saw violence,a separatist government. The 80's saw Toronto replace Montreal as leading financial centre of the country. The 90's saw how close Quebec came to separating even with the voting process being rigged. The 00 years of the 2000 saw a population decline as the young university educated are leaving for Ontario and western Canada. Now here we are in the first year of the teen years and in 11 Quebec falls in love with the NDP because a charismatic smiling moustache wooed them over. And now we find out that son-of-a Trudeau is a separatist.
Quebec in Canada is irrelevant politically and economically. And yes,we're slowly finding out that Ontario is becoming economically irrelevant too.Nfld and Alberta...we're counting on you to keep the country together.

Sad, isn't it - that so many people in our country - now feel they have to demonstrate their family history or bloodline - to feel like a Quebecker? Pretty - earth shattering really. I mean I've been a Quebecker pretty much all my life and while I was growing up in OUR Canadian Owned Province - everyone who LIVED Here considered themselves a Quebecker - no matter what language we spoke - or who or what our ancestors were - and especially what they did or did not do 300 years ago!! This Quebecois thing is imho barbaric.

Quebec is
Canada's largest province...
area wise...

it is very rich in resources...

Many English speaking Canadians
prefer to fly over it
due to the langauge barrier...
but it connects
the east coast of Canada to the west coast...

I personally cannot
just allow it to separate
or be removed from our government
in another manner.
