When Is Canada's 2012 Federal Budget?

UPDATE: Jim Flaherty has announced that the federal budget will be delivered on Thursday March 29.

When is Canada's 2012 federal budget?

That's the big question in Ottawa as February draws to a close without a firm date.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has said he still hopes to present the budget in March and Ottawa insiders have their eye on March 27, according to The Globe And Mail's John Ibbitson.

That means the budget would come just days after the NDP choose their new leader at their Toronto convention on March 24. Besides keeping the Ottawa press corps on its feet, a March 27 budget would quickly shift focus away from the New Democrats and back to the Conservatives' agenda.

That doesn't seem to be why the Tories are holding off though. Ibbitson speculates that Flaherty may wait until April to present the government's spending plans, largely due to the economic uncertainty in Europe.

Back in January Flaherty was already warning that troubles in the Eurozone could delay the budget.

Those warnings were echoed by Environment Minister Peter Kent in a meeting with The Huffington Post Canada's editorial board on Thursday. "We're very concerned about the precarious international state of the economic recovery and anything that we do in Canada with regards to management of our budget and deficit reduction has to be done in light of that," Kent said. "We continue to follow with interest and concern what's going on, for example, in the European economy."

And what's going on in Europe seems to be changing what is coming when the budget does drop.

On Thursday, Flaherty said the coming budget will not be austerity driven. Flaherty is changing his tone after months of Tory telegraphing on coming cuts to the public service of between 5 and 10 per cent and indications the government is set to lay out plans to reform Old Age Security.

The Conservatives look as if they are responding to criticism that Canada doesn't need cuts when the global economic situation remains uncertain. Earlier this month, ratings agencies Moody's and Fitch both argued that Canada doesn't need to implement austerity measures and that doing so would likely have serious adverse effects in a climate of reduced international demand.

It seems like Flaherty is listening, but we'll have to wait until ... well we'll just have to wait to find out.

"this budget is for you" means to me that this budget has been put out specifically to screw us the middle class/lower class. Scary! Well, at least the room temperature IQ people who voted for them should be happy!!

Its kinda funny to read the comments on this article when the one directly above it seems to be making it quite clear that the conservatives are doing a fairly good job in restoring Canada's fiscal footing.
Rant away!

jobs are still about 250 thousands below 2008 levels. jobs creation reports show losing more and more middle class manufacturing jobs. being replaced by low paying part time and jobs earning under 10 000. your disgusting defending the service slave economy while families cant afford to pay for the basics. keep writing more and more about how you support selling out canadians for corporate profit.

I hear, feel and share in your frustration.

Don't pay too much attention to these right wing corporatist elitists. They have been socially engineered, indoctrinated into believing their own lies. Chuckle. After all they are the brightest and the best? Uh, NO!

Keep up the good work.

The poor, working poor, working and middle class have lousy lobbyists, unlike the wealthy who have the best that money can buy.

I give them 73% on fiscal responsibility. A passing grade, and certainly better than some governments, but no flower sticker either.

Yeah, its a reasonable job their doing. They had to plow a lot of money into the economy during the credit meltdown, now its time to tighten the belt. If you look at Ontario as a comparison of leadership and fiscal responsibility, there is no comparison. Steve is the guy that takes the credit and the heat. Could you imagine Iggy steering us through the last 3 years? (shudder)
Cheers.

Why it takes so much time? Its not hard to figure. Our Lou Costello clone is a very bad finance minister. He always have to do what he didn't want to do in the first place! This is the only finance minister in the world that said there was no real problem with the economy until he got a robocall from some vice president of GM! Put the billion Lou or else! This is how the reformists do a budget!

The reformists call that a practical man. I call that incompetent!

Why did it take so long?

Because organizing purges takes time.

when youb are finished this episode ------call for an audit of CRA -------It should not take 18 months after they compklete the auit to get a cheque---ie for the government to give you your own money back---
and it should not take a year to complete a simple audit on a personal tax return ----criminals get faster trials or the case is thrown out

Sorry for the budget delay, but Jimmy's only now facing up to fact that seeing as the senior citizens are his voting base, all he can really do that's politically acceptable is crap on the civil servants. Stay tuned.

Stephen Harper, Rob Nicholson, John Baird, Jim Flaherty and Vic Toews, along with the rest of the Conservatives are liars, cheats and thieves! Bill-C10 threatens to throw many in jail longer and needlessly! Bill C-11 would strip Canadians of even more rights to what we already own and censor our flow of information! Bill-30 will strip us of our privacy! Now lets not forget the G20 fiasco, Vic Toews immortal centimes about Canadians being pedophiles, the planned pension cuts, or their election fraud, and now they're delaying the budget, as if we don't know their motivations! The fascist Conservatives and would turn our country into an Orwellian nightmare! They aren't even a legitimate government! Canada needs to rise up march on Ottawa and occupy the parliament! We need to take back our country, remove the Conservatives from power! Those that would appose the will of the people need to be taught a lesson, followed by some good old fashion tarring and feathering, finish with banishing traitors from Canada! Finally Canadians need some laws that allow us to force referendums on the government and punish corrupt politicians who think they can screw with their people, their employers, you and me! Shout from every mountain top, "WE WILL NOT STAND FOR CORRUPTION WITHIN OUR GOVERNMENT! WE'RE COMING FOR YOU HARPER REGIEM! EXPECT US!"

People shouldn't fear the government, the government should fear the people!
04:56 PM on 02/25/2012
Here Here !!!!!!!!

You make more sense than any political analyst I have ever heard !!

WE SHOULD ALL rise up march on Ottawa and occupy the parliament !!

And punish corrupt politicians !!!

Where do we sign up ??!!

That may be true of the constitution, but not necessarily true in practice. Because governments are the first to void the constitution and laws that they have enected.

Cut the transfers? - These are the guys who have decided to reach directly into Provincial coffers & spend there money for them via New Prisons etc.

You do realize there is only one taxpayer, so what Harper proposes will eventually find it's way to your pay check, right.?

What good is a 2% GST cut when it was financed with BORROWED IMF CASH & saddles the Country with Deficit & interest payments?

Not only does this 'Economic Emperor' truly have no clothes but as anyone can now see, he has very small 'nads' as well!
03:28 PM on 02/24/2012
The economy was the only thing Harper would talk about but yet we still wait for the budget. Waiting to find out what happens in Europe? Is this how they planned their other budgets? Wouldn't it make more sense to get it in place and PLAN for things to get worse in Europe like EVERY financial analyst is saying it will.
Why with one of the strongest economies according to Jimmy, are we waiting to find out how Europe does?
Did the tax break to the corporation leave you with a lot less money than you expected? Got the math wrong and are hoping for another meltdown to blame it on? With the lack of knowledge your other ministers have shown so far on things like the Omnibus crime bill or the Internet surveillance bill, it wouldn't surprise me if you someone put the decimal point in the wrong place. And now your trying to find a way to get your corporate buddies to help out?

C'mon Jimmy!
Give us the straight dope.
We can take it.
Besides, Canadians will understand when you have to make adjustments.
We are a very liberal minded people.
Flexible to the point of plasticity in our cognitive capacity.
