Woman In Labour For 75 Days: Stayed Upside Down In Bed For Months

Woman 75 Days In Labour

A Polish woman has given birth after what could be the world's longest labour, according to Reuters. Joanna Krzysztonek, of Wroclaw, Poland, was pregnant with triplets, when one of the fetuses was born prematurely and died in Krzysztonek's fifth month of pregnancy. For the sake of the other two babies, doctors advised Krzysztonek to lie in bed with her feet above her head for the remainder of the gestation period.

“I sighed with relief that there was a chance to keep the pregnancy and to give the babies a chance to be born successfully,” she told Reuters.

Twins Iga and Ignacy were then born at 32 weeks into the pregnancy, on February 15, and doctors say they consider Krzysztonek to have been in labour since the birth of the first baby. The babies are currently in incubators, but it's expected they will be leaving the hospital soon.

This isn't the first time a mother has gone through such a procedure in order to save her baby. Last year, Donna Kelly spent three months lying with her feet above her head in a hospital bed before her daughter, Amelia, was born.

At that time, Professor Siobhan Quenby, a leading expert on recurrent miscarriages, advised that gravity could reduce the pressure on Mrs. Kelly’s cervix and recommended that she spend 24 hours a day on a hospital bed tilted upwards to elevate her feet above her head.

For Krzysztonek, the time spent upside down apparently affected her balance slightly, but she is now able to walk without any issues.

This is not a new medical procedure. This is done very frequently to prevent early delivery.

I too was pregnant with triplets back in 1990 and went into labor at 14 weeks, that is when I found out that I had an incompentant cervix. I had dialated to 3cm when the doctors gave me another option...I had a cerclage placed on my cervix and was put on terbutaline, magnesium sulfate, and ritodrine for 8 weeks. I was also hospitalized on bedrest with my bed at a 45 degree angle unside down, only allowed to shower every couple days, and using a bedpan. Even with all the intervention I still gave birth to my triplets on Dec 19, 1990. Because of how premature they were they all passed away. Yes, what they say is true, a good mother will do what ever nessasary to save the lives of their children. Today I am blessed to have 2 beautiful teenaged boys that with the help of the cerclage I was able to make it to full term!!

Apparently, child birth isn't the big deal that I thought it was. This woman did it standing on her head!

That's nothing!

I knew a girl who spent most of her college years with her legs above her head.

The title suggested that she spent the time hanging by her heels from the ceiling. Glad that wasn't the case.

Not to be crass, but if she was in this position for 24 hours a day, how did she use the bathroom?

No, probably a bedpan...and it's called Trendelenberg. The pelvis is tilted up but the head of the bed can still be tilted up ( called Modified Trendelenberg)so she can be less uncomfortable. This is not an unusual position for high risk pregnant Moms. What is unusual is that she didn't get infected and deliver the other 2 soon after the first. Generally the opening of the cervix, along with the cord hanging into the vagina, is a great transporter of bacteria into the uterine cavity.

To headline the story that she "was upside-down" is false and misleading...and STUPID!
12:55 PM on 03/10/2012
She wasn't "upside down". As the photo makes clear, she was inclined with her feet higher than her head. Use the right words.

If simply having your feet are at a higher level than your head makes you "upside down," then what's a handstand? I'd say she was "bedridden on a reverse incline.

Talk about sensationalizing...."

thats terrible though. there has to be another way. I just feel so sorry for mothers who must let a pregnancy go because they cannot be away from work or must be at home to care for other children. What a blessing however.

In the United States Planned Parenthood would have solved this dilemma in about 30 minutes!

your mistaken. only if the mother wanted to abort the babies, she would have had the option to choose what SHE wanted to do with her own body. Planned Parenthood is a viable resource for women. Not everyone thinks the way you do...thank goodness.
