Justin Trudeau overcame expectations and convincingly defeated Tory Senator Patrick Brazeau in a boxing bout in Ottawa Saturday night.

The referee called the fight around the middle of the third two-minute round of the Olympics rules bout.

Trudeau dominated round two and round three after Brazeau came out swinging in round one.

Brazeau opened strong, but became visibly tired as the fight went on, allowing Trudeau to land numerous jabs and eventually pummel the Tory Senator. The referee counted Brazeau down once in round two and by round three Trudeau was the only one landing any solid shots.

After the fight, Brazeau had a large welt below his eye and was having trouble catching his breath.

"He didn't get me down,'' said Brazeau, to boos, after the fight. He also challenged Trudeau to a rematch next year, but the Liberal MP said on Monday the he's not interested.

Trudeau praised his opponent after the battle. "All I know is, he had reason to be confident because he can hit like a Mack truck," the MP for Papineau told reporters.

"He didn't know that I could take it and keep going.''

Asked what hurt most, Brazeau responded "Oh, definitely the ego.''

"You know, I'm a fighter and I'm a competitive guy. Obviously I like to trash talk,'' he said.

"But again, I fell short tonight. But I'm still glad that I trained for five months for this. You know, I came up short 30 seconds, so maybe I'll try to make it up next year.''

The Fight for the Cure bout took place at the Hampton Inn Convention Centre in Ottawa, and was televised live on the Sun News Network.

Brazeau, a 5'10",183 pound karate black belt was the early favourite when the fight was announced, but the 6'2, 180 pound Trudeau won the day.

Monday will bring further humiliation for Brazeau. He'll have his lengthy locks chopped off in the foyer of the House of Commons as part of a side bet made between the two fighters. Brazeau will also be forced to wear a Liberal jersey for a week. Trudeau said on Saturday night that he chose the stakes because First Nations warriors historically cut their hair as a sign of shame.

Here I am to eat crow.

I did not think either of these men would be able to box and that it would be nothing but a brawl. Being a brawl, I could only see Brazeau winning. The truth is that Trudeau had a very good jab and very good endurance. You can't really appreciate how tiring boxing is until you try it yourself. Trudeau was in excellent condition and turned out to be one tough customer.

Congratulations Justin!

Notwithstanding the fund-raising cause associated with this event, their decision to engage in an activity that has the unstated objective of incapacitating your opponent unconscious sends the wrong message, particularly when some Canadians already have concerns regarding the shenanigans of their parliamentarians. Those that aspire to a life in politics can be motivated by the example set by those already there. I am not sure if Brazeau and Trudeau sent the right message with this stunt. db

If Justin wants to box, let him box Mike Tyson. Although it might be more fun to see him debate Mike. After all, if Justin wants to box, why can't Mike debate?
All of this nonsense is a freak show.... but I suppose it is more or less what you expect considering who spawned pretty boy

awww go cry some more Trudeau was an excellent politician, his son is a pretty good politician, and a OK boxer, he won, get over it its symbolic of what is going to happen next election. muclair and whoever the liberal leader are are going to rip apart the COns like this boxing match. the "ruling party" isnt the liberals, its whichever party can best present a progressive, and moderate party that represents Canadians values. the Cons do not suit any of these requirements, they will soon be a distant memory.

Do we have to pay Sen. Brazeau to 55 yrs. old? MP Trudeau we can get rid of anytime if he has policy changes but SEN. BRAZEAU ? I've never heard of him.Part of the fed or prov. legislature? He's appointed for life!!
10:38 PM on 04/01/2012
Brazeau will be there until he turns 75. I think Stephen Harper might abolish the Senate in 2112.

I hate to pooh-pooh this BUT - I wish our 'elected' officials could make better use of their time - maybe looking at social problems or the banking system for example...And think of other activities for charity events. (And - by the way - you're in gov't - maybe lobby for fewer gazebos - and more $ for cancer research)
In view of the concern of concussions in NHL enforcers, and players, the pending lawsuit by NFL players for same, the Parkinson's resulting from a punch-drunk Ali etc - I don't think this was the best idea.
Reminded me of watching a 1984 - type horror movie. (This is our representation?)
(And he won because of a huge reach advantage. Maybe next year have Chris Pronger vs Sid the Kid - and see who has the gr8er concussion symptom reoccurrence)

Ali's boxing has nothing to do with his Parkinson's.

I know Ali seems to think it does, and I love Ali... but on this he happens to be wrong.

I think the latest research continues to suggest that head trauma is a contributing factor to diseases that are related to neurological trauma - boxers, hockey and foot ball player have a greater likelihood of developing these kinds of illnesses due to repeated injury.... Sydney Crosby is trying to avoid that fate by taking a very careful and measured return to hockey

Brazeau's arms are too big. Except for heavy weights, boxers have skinny arms. Guys that look like body builders stepping into the ring can't keep their arms up throughout the fight.

Learned my lesson thirty years ago I was pretty bulked up and had a wrestling match with a guy who was 2 inches shorter and 25 pounds lighter. My butt was dragging after five minutes of chasing him around. Big muscles are a huge disadvantage in some sports
