F-35, CBC Cartoon: Journal De Montréal Image Questioned Over 9/11 Imagery

Cbc F35 Cartoon Montreal
This Marc Beaudet cartoon on an F-35 jet flying into the CBC building in Montreal is raising questions about whether a line has been crossed. The caricature was published in Journal de Montréal.

An F-35 headed for a crash encounter with the CBC building in Montreal: Political satire or bad taste?

That's the question on the minds of many people today after Journal de Montréal published a cartoon Tuesday by artist Marc Beaudet that parallels the events of 9/11.

The cartoon references the recent controversy in Canada over the procurement process for the F-35 fighter jet. Last week the auditor general released a report slamming the federal government's handling of the fighter jet purchase and revealing that the true cost for the planes will likely be $10 billion more than estimates released to the public.

Does the cartoon cross the line?

The attention for the cost of the F-35 program comes on the heels of a 10 per cent cut in funding for the CBC in the federal budget. The public broadcaster is cutting at least 650 jobs and is planning to begin airing radio ads to generate new revenue. CBC's headquarters in Montreal, pictured in the cartoon, will also be reduced by 400,000 square feet, according to OpenFile

Many have pointed to the massive cost of the F-35s to argue against cuts to the CBC and other public services. The "if we just bought one less F-35 we could..." meme has been popular on social networks.

The Journal de Montréal isn't the first organization to face criticism for using imagery that evokes memories of 9/11.

Last year, South Korean developers faces a torrent of criticism for a building design that many thought resembled the World Trade Center buildings exploding.

It is a fair comment on the deep-seated thuggery in the Harper government.

WOW people at some point americans have to let this go. Yes 9-11 was a tradgedy, but the british don't get pissed anytime an explosion is depicted near a subway station. So get a grip and let it go., move on, grow up.

I must be really out of it today because I didn't make a parallel to 9/11 until this article told me to. Still, it doesn't outrage me as it seems to everyone else.

IMHO, it crosses the line simply because it uses an infamous moment where people actually died tragically to make a lessor point. While one can (easily) argue about the government's priorities, it isn't purposefully killing its citizens as a result.

while this is inappropriate, political cartooning through the ages has always been so. it's only in more recent, politically correct, times they have been tamed. go back to the 1800's to see vicious.

I enjoy political cartoons and I am addicted to comedy. My taste in humor might even seem irreverent to many, but not to me.
However, THIS IS NOT FUNNY TO ME, and was an easy get.

This is a very real and horrific image, and we witnessed it, not once, but twice, and the world stood still.

I can't wait for the yuk yuks, that instantly remind us, of the Oklahoma City bombing.

You never know, of course. It might turn out that the cost of building the new prisons the Harper 'mandatory minimum' sentencing will make necessary might exceed even the outrageous cost of the F-35s....perhaps all the empty cultural institutions and Katimavik offices can be converted to detention and jail space...

Most political satire is in bad taste. That is why it is usually humerous and accurate. This might be a little too blunt for a lot of us but my interpretation is not so much 9/11 but rather the collision between the grossly over expensive purchase of questionable aircraft and the intentional axing of a Canadian institution. In the head on crash of cutbacks, which should come out on top?

Sure it references 9/11. Perfectly. Ideologues destroying the public's sense of trust. Works for me.

CONservatives have always been hostile to democracy; and CBC has been a thorn in their collective authoritarian mindset. A fascist regime doesn't want to be called by media ...

It was obvious to everyone that CONs would bring holocaust to CBC - an institution favored by majority of Canadians - once they got the majority.
08:13 PM on 04/10/2012
It is terribly insensitive ....to Canadians, and not because of 9/11.

It trivializes the fraud and corruption surrounding the acquisition of the F-35's.
It tries to inject humour into the idea of using these death machines to kill your enemy.
It suggests that the CBC is the enemy.

It seems to indicate that Harper has chosen to play dress up in warrior's clothes and that his targets will be the legitimate voice of the the people that is the CBC.

An apt metaphor that highlights the perverse, childish attitudes of our "leaders".

Western nations constantly print cartoons of the downfall of many nations. It is acceptable because it's intent is probably void of disrespect for the Trade Towers working people.

When I saw it without the information re the F35 and the CBC building, I thought - no not funny.
Still not so funny, but then what the Harper government is doing to the CBC is just not funny.

The government doesn't need to fund the media. That is the exact opposite of a democracy. Open up that market for investment either Canadian or foreign. Or are you too afraid that your leftist ideals will be exposed as idiotic?

Sure and American media is the ideal we should hope for? Perhaps you have not been watching Faux, CNN or any of the other crap offered up as NEWS. CBC is not perfect but it is sure better than the American system.

We fund oil companies and many other businesses through tax breaks but thats ok too right?

Sir, I think you are getting Liberalism/Capitalism mixed up with democracy. Socialism can be democratic if the people vote for it.

Perhaps the Harper government has not gone far enough. The CBC-RADIO CANADA needs to shut down altogether and sold to private enterprise. If it means that the Harper government will save the Canadian Taxpayer money then by all means go ahead and get rid of this pink wlephant right away.

With private news organizations becoming part of the entertainment industry, the need for public service news organizations (the CBC here in Canada and National Public Radio and tv in the states) - that have no profit motive becomes ever more important.
08:57 PM on 04/10/2012
No profit motive? You don't think the CBC will be even more slanted now that the Conservatives cut their funding? Use your head. The government should have no bearing on the media. End of story.
