LA Kings Twitter Account Trolls Canucks Fans After Game 1 Win

The Kings won game one and started a Twitter flame war.

The Los Angeles Kings struck first in their playoff series against the Vancouver Canucks, winning Game 1 4-2. They may have also struck the first blow in what is sure to be a heated battle between fans of the hockey franchises.

"To everyone in Canada outside of BC, you're welcome," the LA Kings twitter account posted shortly after the team's win on Wednesday night.

Many were not amused by the tweets (see our slideshow below). "What a classy organization you have there. There are Canucks fans world wide. Try not to be sore winners please," tweeted @lolosum.

"Jerk move with that tweet. Apparently class is not valued in LA. Although maybe that's not news?," tweeted @k8senkow.

ESPN's Chris Jones also got into the act. "YOU STOLE GRETZKY #neverforget," the sportswriter posted.

The Kings' tweet, of course, toyed with the idea that the Canucks, one of two Canadian teams in the NHL playoffs this year, is largely reviled outside of B.C. And maybe one of the league's most despised teams.

“They are the most arrogant team I played against and the most hated team I’ve ever played against,” said former NHLer and Boston Bruin Mark Recchi in an interview.

Others say it's the team's on-ice theatrics: the diving, after-the-whistle embellishments and the odd-biting episode.

"They have those guys who do things that tick you off on the ice to get under your skin, and some of them are good at it. If they're losing, you can blow them off. But because they're good, it definitely makes it more annoying," said Kings defenceman Drew Doughty.

Others chalk it up to the fans, some of whom got a bit too rowdy after last year's Stanley Cup loss.

Whether you love or hate the Canucks, the Kings tweet raised eyebrows and may have crossed a line. The Globe and Mail is reporting that LA Kings vice-president of communications Mike Altieri is "addressing" the situation.

I'm a Canucks fan and I thought it was pretty funny. Don't get what the big deal is?? I mean, I know it's fashionable to hate on the Canucks, but mostly I see a lot of whining about Canuck's fans 'whining' - it's a joke, who cares if some people got upset, whatever!!

Typical Canucks fan, still crying about the Bruins, even on stories that have NOTHING to do with them! Stick to the Kings right now, looks like they won't be as easy as some people thought. =)

And GO BRUINS!

From a fan or even a player, it's cool. From the official team twitter page, not so much.

I'm a Canucks fan and I laughed when I saw it. We all take ourselves WAY too seriously these days and everything has to be analyzed for controversy. A little friendly razzing makes the games fun.

Fake outrage should be limited to politics. It was funny and true, Canadian fans outside of B.C. do hate the Canucks and their diving and biting.
03:16 PM on 04/12/2012
stating it as "true" shows how incompetent you are.
04:56 PM on 04/12/2012
Yeah what was I thinking. Hockey fans in Alberta and Ontario just love the Canucks. Alex Burrows is the most popular player in the league. How could I have been so wrong. Are you kidding?

You're this irate over some twitter reactions? How does this even compare to what happened after game 7? I get that the riot references/jokes will be an easy response to anything related to the Canucks, but surely you realize there were many more fans who didn't riot, and those who did riot primarily weren't fans? Why does this have to be pointed out time and time again? Oh, right, it's not what the Canucks-haters want to hear so they put their fingers in their ears and say "LA LA LA I can't hear you!!"

Give them a "clean" area to shoot up or smoke up and then a tree to hug and all will be forgiven.
