In The Dog House

Puppy Or Baby

Sydney Morning Herald:

I had always assumed that following the birth of our third child, and my subsequent session with a man with a scalpel and some sterile scissors, that our family was ''complete''.

It turns out I was wrong. Apparently, there was still an almighty void that simply had to be filled. Apparently, what we really, really needed to make our house a home and to hermetically seal our little family unit was a puppy.

Had me laughing my head off! How I know about puppies. After not having a dog for years I decided to get one. Actually somone brought a picture of these 13 puppies. My son and I went to "just look at them" Ha! She came home with us that day. She was very quick to learn. It was winter, (the best time to get a puppy ) She was easy to house train. Out and in. She did her business then wanted to play outside. Within maybe 2 weeks no problems. She had to play for a half hour before going out again and then bed. Teething was painfull. lol The only trouble is when they reach the 6 month mark they forget how to sit ,lay down, and come commands. And you start all over. Priceless. I'd do it again in a flash. We fostered for the SPCA. Had about 100 puppies in a 2 year period. They all went back at 10 weeks old house trained. All were adopted before we took them back. Between puppies and babies I think it is about the same amount of commitment. They just don't talk back...............much! lol

The puppy is, initially, by far the most demanding and problematic, but the learning curve does not take 20 + years.

Got fooled didn't you? Puppies need as much care as babies. Plus those walks outside. Just like babies, things can become better with time.

BOTH are such a joy. I only have my cat left and miss my 3 dogs. My 2 boys are married and are away from home. Miss them so much too. But with dogs, cats too it is never boring!

Cat's are good. But, dogs get in your face and tell you to take me out now. Or they'll sit there and won't let you forget about what they want.
