Robocall Scandal: Elections Canada 'Keeping Secret' Probes Into Majority Of Election Complaints, Democracy Watch Says

The Huffington Post Canada  |  By Posted: 04/16/2012 1:28 pm Updated: 04/16/2012 1:55 pm

Elections Canada is withholding information on about 3,000 of the more than 5,000 complaints it has received in the past 15 years, a government accountability watchdog group says.

In the wake of this year’s robocalls scandal, Democracy Watch compiled data on 5,018 complaints Elections Canada has received since the 1997 election, and found the election agency hasn’t released information on 2,982 of them.

The main problem is no one can tell whether Elections Canada has been enforcing the law fairly and properly because it has failed to disclose details of how it has investigated and ruled” on the complaints, Democracy Watch stated in a press release Monday.

“Federal MPs have to stop being so negligent and start demanding regular, detailed reports about what all the key federal good government watchdogs are doing, and not doing,” Tyler Sommers, the group’s coordinator, said in the statement.

The question of electoral fairness was propelled to the forefront of Canada’s political debate earlier this year when allegations emerged that an individual known only as “Pierre Poutine” had arranged for robocalls in a riding in Guelph, Ontario, which attempted to send voters to nonexistent voting stations.

Since then, many Canadians have come forward with complaints about irregularities in the 2011 election.

Late last month, Elections Canada Chief Marc Mayrand testified in front of a House of Commons committee, saying that misdirection of voters was “absolutely outrageous” and “totally unacceptable in a modern democracy.''

Mayrand revealed the agency is looking into 800 complaints in 200 ridings regarding the 2011 election, and had opened 250 files.

“However, Mr. Mayrand continued to keep secret its rulings on 1,003 other complaints filed with Elections Canada by voters during the 2011 election,” Democracy Watch said in its statement, “and on 1,979 other complaints that Elections Canada received during the 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008 elections (as well as an unknown number of complaints filed in between elections since 1997).”

The group argued members of Parliament had repeated chances to demand that Elections Canada reveal all its investigations on electoral complaints, but did not act to do so.

Mayrand is expected to testify before the House of Commons again before the end of the summer.

In the meantime, robocalls complaints continue to pile up. The latest wave of complaints has been at the provincial level, with Elections Alberta saying late last month it had recevied 150 complaints, at that time, regarding robocalls in the current provincial election.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE F-35 SCANDAL, BURIED WITH ROBO CALLS????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
10:11 AM on 07/10/2012
It took a few searches but thank God for Vanc Sun, the Star.com, and sites like this...in order to find an update on the Robo Call Scandal. Yep, Con's still appear cooked. So now on "summer break" for which they didn't even crease their trousers after the last sitting - I thought the BREAKING NEWS by CBC and CTV had died. Like I said thank God for the noted media that keeps on trucking. I thought I'd have to call Sara from PennLive who never leaves a story until the end. Now, that's a reporter that flogs a story to its death!! Come on Canadian media FLOG!! Canadians want to know how bad they were smooooded and how corrupt their elective government really is. I agree boot the Elections Canada investigators and get some real investigators that can lay charges. More action is better than all the garbbley words. I don't think if I owed the Revenue boys; that they's wait months and years for me to come up with some answers much less "payback"...Action NOW!!

Sounds like a typical federal bureaucracy.
It seems as though this whole robo-call story is near dead.
A lot of mistakes were made and a lot was made out of those mistakes.
I never seen anything that would make me believe it was a nation wide conspiracy to subvert the vote.

no of course you don't

but it was those damn Liberals in power, you'd be shaking your fist at the sky

I don't know man.
800 verified and vetted complaints spread over 200 ridings comes out to 4 calls per riding.
Hardly a nationwide campaign to subvert the vote.
That being said, more likely there were several hundred calls made in a few ridings.
That could have been orchastrated by a single individual or a small group of people.
Which makes more sense to you?
I should also add, I voted liberal for the first two Chretien governments.
By the third.... I thought it was time for a change.

The KW Record already identified the Tories as being responsible for Robocalls in the Waterloo Region area. Read the published story here: http://www.therecord.com/news/local/article/642172--phone-number-behind-misleading-call-disconnected

Read the story.
The Tories had a lady registerd to vote in two different ridings and when they called to remind her to get out and vote they advised her to go to the wrong polling satation.
Seems like a easy mistake to make.

How does a political party register a person to vote?
Could this be the reason I seem to always vote for a loser, Im registered with elections Canada
10:35 AM on 04/17/2012
the Tories refers to the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada

the unholy alliance between them and the reform party is NOT the Tories

All that has to happen is that the matter is brought to a judge who can rule if the election in that riding was questionable, then order a by-election. It need not go through Ottawa. Elections Canada needs to serve the country, not whoever is in power. Anything less is an attack on democracy

Paper Ballots WORK. Unverifiable e-voting doesn't

The media continues to confuse the issue with the term "Robocall". A term that is reminiscent of some kind of innocent and comical skit on SNL.

This is ELECTION FRAUD of the highest form, according to THE ELECTION ACT OF CANADA -- punishable up to 5 years in prison and banishment from parliament.

It's time to start calling this what it is!

And they never will- I said several weeks ago, that this story would be pushed off the front pages until it was executed (like a political prisoner) in the boardrooms of news media outlets around the country. There is very little accountability in our style of government to begin with; now that the media is complicit, there is NO accountability.

Do you actually trust the media to provide their readers with the facts, actual facts I mean?
The media is a business where unbiased reporting of news, that is sometimes very bland, does not translate into increased readership or increased circulation meaning advertising revenue stagnates.
But not to worry, the boys of the media are mostly likely hatching the next scandle for everyone to get riled up about.
