A Shetland Sheepdog, like the one pictured here, died after being speared with a broomstick Friday.

A dog out with its owner on an evening walk north of Toronto has died after a man allegedly speared it with a broomstick on Friday.

The attack occurred at around 5:45 p.m. Friday on Pine Bough Manor near Bayview and 19th avenues in Richmond Hill.

A woman was walking the dog, a six-year-old Shetland sheepdog, when she was approached by a man, who then speared the dog with the broomstick, said York Regional Police Const. Rebecca Boyd.

The dog later died, she said.

Police have arrested and charged a 68-year-old man with injuring an animal. He will appear in court on May 25.

Police have yet to comment on a possible motive.

someone should put that broom handle where the sun don't shine. I hate cruelty to animals, it shows how sick humanity has become.

The laws regarding animal cruelty in Canada are a joke. This sick individual may receive at most a petty fine for killing this dog. I hope that the political will in Canada changes in favour of animal rights. I would very much like it if Parliament amends the Criminal Code Of Canada so that judges can sentence those who are found guilty of animal cruelty to some serious jail time. Perhaps only then, will people think twice about hurting an animal.

How much force to attack a poor dog with a broomstick and kill him? Might have hit the spleen. The man is a mad dog.

I like to consider myself a peaceful, nonviolent person, but if that were my dog, I would have gone ballistic.

Laws regarding animal abuse in Canada are almost non-existent. We have to do something about that. Anyone who abuses animals must do jail time. Not just a slap on the wrist.

What am I saying, murderers and others in Canada don't do enough time, they get sent to the corner and then released. there is no such thing as justice in Canada.

The laws really have to be changed in this country in regards to cruelty to animals. If this man had done this to a human being he would still be in jail. They let him go free where he might kill another animal. Most of us experience unconditional love solely from our pets. The emotional toll on the owners must be huge. As far as I am concerned he should spend the remainder of his life in jail.

Jail is too good for this freak. Take him to a fenced in tennis court, cover him in pate and then attach meat to his body, throw him in the tennis court and unleash 8-10 dogs pitbulls on him. An eye for an eye, except he'll know how it feels for a few seconds (if he's lucky) how vicious a dog really can be.

Pit Bulls are one of the nicest dogs going. It is the owners that do not know how to train or deal with them (or any other dog). I had one who lived until he was 12 and he would lick you to death, never bit anyone or anything and loved to play ball.

I rescued a fox terrier that was more vicious than most dogs, she would attack anything, anyone, especially my pit bull, who was afraid of her, he gave her a wide berth until I put her on Prozac, then they were inseparable. No amount of training would calm that dog down. She lived to a ripe old age of 17 after she learned to be calm. She was 11 pounds of bad attitude.

When I walked them, I muzzled her and not the pit.

If I were you neighbor and he did that to your dog, you'd have to get in line behind me.

I bet the freak thought that poor dog was a seal. Canada loves to butcher their seals.

Sad but true. Canada really hates their seals. This poor dog. How awful.

Actually you are wrong. Canadians love seals, but our government and a couple dozen 'Newfies' hate them. The majority of Canadians would have liked the brutality stopped years ago. It's a waste of resources and money keeping the violence going.

Someone needs to poke him with a big stick! There is no excuse for such cruelty.

Huffpost doesn't mention that the suspect was released from custody, but here it is from the Toronto Star: "A Richmond Hill man, who police haven’t identified, was released from custody and ordered to appear in court May 25 on charges of injuring or endangering an animal." http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/article/1166364--man-kills-richmond-hill-woman-s-dog-as-she-took-it-for-a-walk?bn=1

What kind of bogus charge is "injuring or endangering" an animal? He KILLED it. And he was RELEASED? He needs to be held in prison until his trial. He sounds quite dangerous. Will he stat stabbing people walking by?

Thank you for posting the link to the Star article, Emerilla. This story is shocking and so
sad. This monster who killed beautiful good natured Diesel is unstable and a danger
to society. This horrible man has done more than just injure or endanger an animal.
Diesel is dead as a result of his cruelty. My heart goes out to Diesel's family. I can't
imagine how horrifying it would be to have your beloved pet attacked and die as a
result of the attack. Don't even ask me what I want to have happen to this disgusting excuse of a human being. I hope that SOB is fined heavily as well as charged.

Police released him? Uh, was he given a psychiatric exam first? My condolences to Molly and her husband. How devasting.
