Ethical Oil: David Suzuki Foundation Should Be Investigated Over 'Political And Partisan Activity'

EthicalOil.org has written to the Canada Revenue Agency asking asking for an investigation of the David Suzuki Foundation.

In a press release, the oil sands lobby group said it has compiled a 44-page letter detailing the "political and partisan activity" of the David Suzuki Foundation over the past year and it believes that the "environmental lobby group's charitable status" should be reviewed.

Ethical Oil points to David Suzuki's endorsement of Ontario Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty's record and his appearance in a Liberal Party of Ontario partisan ad. As well it cites "persistent calls to action," "frequent condemnation of government policy," and "trying to sway the Senate to abandon their inquiry on foreign funding of charities" as example of political work.

Earlier this month, Suzuki announced he had stepped down from the board of directors of his organization. He said he did this to shield it from partisan attacks.

"I want to speak freely without fear that my words will be deemed too political, and harm the organization of which I am so proud," he wrote in an open letter. "I am keenly aware that some governments, industries and special interest groups are working hard to silence us. They use threats to the Foundation's charitable status in attempts to mute its powerful voice on issues that matter deeply to you and many other Canadians."

Suzuki's decision follows the Conservative government setting its sights on environmental groups in Canada that are preventing resource development, such as Enbridge's Northern Gateway Pipeline.

The federal government's March 30 budget stated that non-profit organizations must provide information regarding political activities. It also committed $8 million to increase supervision of charities.

Tax returns show only a tiny fraction of Canadian organizations spend money for political purposes.

A Canadian Press analysis of the Canada Revenue Agency's charities database found 450 of the 85,000 charities registered in Canada reported spending money on political activities.

It is possible the actual number could be higher, since charities self-report to the CRA.

Still, the finding that so few charities spend money politicking raises questions about the Conservatives' motivation for further restricting these activities.

Charities are allowed to engage in limited, non-partisan politics. Most charities can spend only 10 per cent of their resources on political activities, although smaller ones are permitted to spend up to 20 per cent.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article stated that Suzuki stepped down from his Foundation earlier this month. In fact, the resignation took place last year, but was only announced this month.

The absurdity of the Ethical Oil campaign is only matched by its unmitigated gall.

Here's a dare - run a poll, please, HuffPo, on how many Canadians want an inquiry into the funding sources and background advisors to Ethical Oil, vs how many Canadians want an inquiry into the funding sources and background advisors of David Suzuki. We all know how that comparison will turn out.

As long as multinational oil companies get to write off all the money they spend on pro-oil advertising campaigns and government lobbying, environmental charities should enjoy the tax benefits of charitable status. It's only fair.

Stephen Harper is a despot and his voice is the only voice in the Conservative party and in Cabinet. Even worse, his voice is not his own.

He is totally co-opted by the American right wing movement which has also co-opted the US Republican Party. Harper is the poster boy for the form of government where policy and action exist to support big business. In Canada's case big international business. This form of government is called corporatism and, as Benito Mussolini stated, fascism. Canada and the US are slipping into a police state cheered along all the way by the right wing club.

EthicalOil has nothing to do with oil. It is funded south of the border. It is part of a coordinated effort to destroy the fabric of Canadian society and replace it with a right wing environment to benefit billionaires without borders like the Koch brothers. Mindless kooks like Ezra Levant, Charles Adler, and Ted Nugent are just stupid (but articulate) people who have 'drunk the fascist kool-aid' and are trying to get us to do the same.

We need Harper out of office now and we need Sunmedia out of business along with all of its talking heads.

with the budget comes a shock ,to learn that enviromental review process has been undermined by the crooks in Ottawa , now claiming that the final decision rests with cabinet is totally contemptible, and then there's the new group doing enviromental review process's comprised of big oil. 4 or 5 of the top producers in Alberta decided to front there own review process to determine that " there's nothing to be concerned with" this project will be rubber stamped at every level Environment be dammed. This was reported by C.B.C. in the 6 weeks since I first read about this , nothing else has been seen or reported, now we know why but still little else on there self imposed mandate.

there's nothing ethical about tar sands bitumen, which uses thousands of gallons of water rendered useless, we need drinking water more than we need ethical oil which is neither, the closest thing to oil being ethical ,is taking plastic's and reverse engineering it back to it's base raw material which can be done, google plastics2oil ,and there is a process that is self fueled by using the off gases and one of the biggest emissions is oxygen, and relatively sulphur free oil diesel and could be an answer to plastic pollutants clogging land fills.

David Suzuki has demonstrated his love of his country and our planet, and NOTHING the Conservatives can do will EVER tarnish his impeccable reputation!

I hope this utterly boomerangs on them and proves to be their downfall, with their despicable attacks on the environment and those fighting to protect it!!!

Those shameless oil companies that are producing oil in Saudi Arabia are the SAME oil companies that are producing oil in North America!!!

The blatant deception of the "ethical oil" meme is just OUTRAGEOUS!!! Fortunately, I don't think the Canadian public is as ignorant as the American public, and of course, we don't have a 24/7 propaganda station promoting these disgusting scams!!!

Ethical Oil is a not-for-profit foundation entirely funded by oil companies. It gets its funding as tax-deductible business spending, and opposes any environmental group that is getting funding from individual citizens (who can only receive a tax deduction if the organization is a Registered Charity). They are trying to attack any opponent's funding, in order to silence opposition.

It is interesting that Stephen Harper's Conservative government is very much in favour of resource companies getting investment funding (including the US and China) to apply Best Practices for profitable resource extraction, but are against any environmental groups from also getting international funding to expand Best Practices in good environmental stewardship. They are dishonest, corrupt, unethical politicians who have been bought and paid for by those oil companies. The banksters have NOTHING on these career criminals!!!

Ethical Oil, which is probably funded by the American Koch Brothers, is going after David Suzuki Foundation because they are speaking out about the pollution from the TAR sands. What total BS. 'Ethical Oil' has the CONServative Party firmly in their pocket, since they ARE all CONServatives.
I think "Ethical Oil" (what a misnomer) should be investigated as to where they receive _their _ funding. "Sauce for the Goose is sauce for the Gander."

Why isn't "ethical" oil being investigated for being NOT ethical?
