"I'm the luckiest man alive. I love women and I get to make beautiful things for beautiful women every day of my life," said Sam Edelman during our interview at Holt Renfrew in Toronto.

The designer was in town to promote his spring collection at Holt Renfrew and meet fans—and his within reach prices and designer aesthetic there are many. We chatted about trends, the shoes every woman should have and his design philosophy.

Why do you think women have such a passion for shoes?

Shoes are a fantasy. They take you to a different place for a few minutes. You don't even need to go to a change room to try them on.

Do you have a favourite shoe from any of your collections?

I would have to say the Angelina. It's the shoe that really launched Sam Edelman shoes. It's a moccasin with a wedge and it sold 600 pairs in one day at Bloomindales.

It seems like spikes—like those on the Lorissa pump— have become a Sam Edelman signature, was that an intentional design decision?

No. Those decisions are never intentional, no matter what anyone says. For instance, Calvin Klein was a coat designer but became famous because of his jeans.

What shoes should every woman have in her wardrobe?

A thong sandal, a colourblocked wedge, peep-toe pumps, a pointy-toed pump with a fine heel, a pair of gladiator sandals and a great pair of nude ballet flats.

Have you ever been subject to knock-offs of your designs?

Of course but I consider it a compliment.
