B.C. Poll Suggests Christy Clark Would Lose To NDP Even If She United The Right

Bc Poll Christy Clark
The Angus-Reid survey of 802 British Columbians, conducted online between May 7-9, pegs B.C. NDP support at 50 per cent. The governing Liberals under Christy Clark manage only 23 per cent, while John Cummins’ B.C. Conservatives muster 19 per cent support. (CP)

Uniting the right will not prevent the NDP's Adrian Dix from becoming the next premier of British Columbia, according to a new poll.

The Angus-Reid survey of 802 British Columbians, conducted online between May 7-9, pegs B.C. NDP support at 50 per cent. The governing Liberals under Christy Clark manage only 23 per cent, while John Cummins' B.C. Conservatives muster 19 per cent support.

This represents a gain of seven points for the NDP since Angus-Reid's last poll taken in late March, with new support coming from the interior and the northern parts of the province, where the Conservatives are polling ahead of the Liberals.

Among men, the gap between the NDP and Liberals is smaller: 45 per cent to 28 per cent. But among women, the New Democrats hold a massive 38 point lead, with 55 per cent support to only 17 per cent for the Clark-led Liberals. The Conservatives, at 20 per cent, are actually doing better than the Liberals among female voters.

The B.C. Conservatives are certainly causing a lot of trouble for the Liberals. Though they were unable to place better than third in the two byelections that were recently swept by the NDP, the Conservatives have taken away almost one-third of voters who cast their ballot for the B.C. Liberals in the 2009 provincial election.

Nevertheless, the split on the right is not the only reason the NDP is on pace for a massive landslide. Even with the Liberals and Conservatives joined together in a "Free Enterprise Coalition" the New Democrats would walk away with a win.

Angus Reid puts support for such a coalition at only 20 per cent among decided voters if it were led by Clark, with 33 per cent opting for the NDP. Removing the undecideds gives the NDP a 20-point lead with 51 per cent to 31 per cent, still more than enough to give the party some 60-plus seats in the 85-seat legislature.

But those identifying Clark as the source of the Liberals' problems appear to be underestimating the real support for Adrian Dix's NDP. Replacing Clark with Cummins or Kevin Falcon, the province's Minister of Finance, changes little: roughly 32 per cent of decideds would vote for a united right led by Falcon, while only 27 per cent would vote for it if it were led by Cummins. In both cases, the NDP wins in a landslide.

This indicates that the antipathy that British Columbians have for the governing Liberals goes far deeper than a dislike of the premier or a split on the right. The New Democrats currently have the support of about half of B.C. voters, and not just because they are the only real alternative. If Clark wants to be premier after the May 2013 election, she will have to do more than simply re-arrange the deck chairs on the right.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story said B.C. Conservatives are actually doing better than the NDP among female voters. They are doing better than the Liberals.

Polls do not translate directly into votes and elected officials. Just look at a few recent elections in Alberta where the whacky far right religious racist nutters pulled ahead in the polls. It was the racist nutters coming out at the last moment to make startling comments that the party head did not refute, that made voters swing back to the middle.

Dix & Company are "acting" middle of the road to avoid the same fate. Dix & Company have control of the NDP message and messaging.

Unless someone can peel back the slick glossy "corporate" PR of the NDP election machine and reveal what will happen if they are elected, they will be elected.

Let no one be misunderstand, when the NDP are elected they will have the federal union chiefs (one in particular) running the agenda and approving all major actions of this provincial NDP party. They always have and always will. Talk to the local lower mainland mayors and ask if they think they could get elected without the support of these people. If they could speak truthfully, they would all say 'no'. Those that went against them, never get re-elected. These mayors were tangled up with the federal unions' lack of support because the initial sky train project would take jobs away from local bus drivers. A tangled mess indeed.

The BC NDP is an arm of the federal union structure and no posturing by Dix & Company to the middle, will ever change that relationship.

That slick glossy "corporate" PR of the NDP election machine must come from the Union Corporation, because the slick glossy "corporate" PR of the Liberal election machine has much deeper pockets and set the spin on the last decade in BC... But don't take the Arbiter's word on it, its all public info mon friar

.What's her business in piling on Mulcair for his comments about oil sands? Does BC deal in oil sands? She's just clueless and has no business in the premier's office. She belongs in the kitchen.

A seat projection based on these polling numbers resulted in the NDP winning 54 seats, the Coalition on 30 and 1 Independent.

Not very encouraging for advocates of a coalition.

I do not think Christy Clark is a bad person, nor is she's manipulative, unethical or creepy.. (see The Zam).

I do think she lacks leadership skills and the ability to execute. If that wasn't enough, she has the personality of a chubby cheeked giddy cheerleader with a fake quick smile that attempts to cover up her stress.

She is naive and without notable strategic, communication and political skill. She does not have strong intelligent political lieutenants surrounding her nor does she have the usual sage adviser every party has in the background.... every leader needs these people to be successful.

She needs to go and a better choice for the Liberals must to be brought forward to salvage any chance of keeping the NDP out of power.

We're going into a long and deep double dip type of recession as China heads into its own deep recession, the US sputters along for the next 20 years and gas prices remain permanently high due to high cost of extraction, supply/demand and transportation. Prior spikes in gas prices were largely temporary and due to political events (OPEC crisis, Sadam's burning oil well, etc).

So we need a fiscally smart political party in power, smarter than we have now and certainly not the NDP.

Let's hope Christy steps down and the (new) Liberals make some sort of pact with the extremely small but growing Conservatives.

she has never gone past grade 12 , she cheated her way into a job she could never do, look up jaspal atwal and his criminal record, and ask why she would need his help to get into the premies seat
09:39 PM on 05/18/2012
Thanks. I did a little search on atwal.. found this article interesting.

http://www.straight.com/article-623731/vancouver/gurpreet-singh-jaspal-atwal-episode-reveals-why-canadian-political-establishment-should-look-hard-itsel

Still, she's a Premiere out of touch and not in control of so many things. If she had the future of this province's best interest at heart she would resign.

Looks like we're going to be stuck with the NDP for some years.. and who knows what havoc they will lay upon the citizens and economy of this great province.

You must be American, given your words there......and not familiar with what the NDP are or what Adrian Dix is like....unless you're under the misapprehension that the BC Liberal Party were every "left" and aren't talking about the NDP at all......if that's the case, be advised that the LINOs (Liberals in name only) are anything but, and have been that way since 1995 when the current bunch hijacked the party for the guy who restored it from the netherworld (he was a moderate-left). It's the part of freebooters and economic pirates now, putting forward ideology and propaganda and lying through their teeth every time their mouths open; that's why they'll get booted out, and why the current Premier hasn't had the proverbial cojones to actually have called an election after the leadership race.

The NDP are opportunists like all other politicians....but they'll NEVER be a right-wing party, nor lean in that direction as Mulcair has federally.......

Clark is completely hopeless as a Premier. She hasn't listened to people and this is the result. She said she would abolish the HST but the way she has gone about it is arrogant and insulting. Yes HST has been repealed but the abolition has been postponed. Her Government ignores the Bill of Rights and installs a non-lawyer as AG who is a bad joke. She declares herself for families and the rest of us can take a hike. And the list goes on and on. So why would people re-elect her? She gives them no reason to do so.
02:33 PM on 05/15/2012
Chrisy is just the lightning rod, the real issue is with her party and the whole pro-corporate agenda. BCers and most Canadians are just sick of it!
Ms. Clark should just do the right thing, acknowledge her govt has lost the confidence of the people, and call an election!
If she doesn't, then the Lieutenant Governor should do it for her!
