EDMONTON -- The parents of a young man accused of killing three of his co-workers and injuring another in an armoured car robbery say they are ``heartbroken.''

A sobbing Sandy Baumgartner told CTV Edmonton there are no words to say how sorry they are for the families of those killed and hurt.

Her husband, who did not want to give his first name out of fear there might be repercussions in the community, says he and his wife are "truly devastated.''

Police allege Travis Baumgartner, 21, was part of a crew of five guards re-loading an ATM machine at the University of Alberta's Edmonton campus early Friday morning when a robbery took place.

He was arrested on the weekend trying to cross the U.S. border and is now in custody in Langley, B.C., and is scheduled to be returned to Edmonton to face first-degree murder charges.

During the manhunt for Travis on Friday, Sandy Baumgartner issued an emotional plea for her son to turn himself in but now says she doesn't believe he heard it.

In that plea, she mentioned a fight she'd had with her son before he left for work but said Monday it was nothing serious, just typical mother-son stuff.

She said her son had wanted to join the police force.

"This is what's so insane about this,'' she said. ``A week before ... he actually emailed me an application for the city police for me to print off and bring home. He actually had it half filled out.''

The couple is grateful their son was arrested without more bloodshed and say they haven't had a chance to speak to him yet.

"What really needs to be done is providing support and love to all those affected by this horrific incident,'' said the father, his hands shaking as he read from a statement.

Sandy Baumgartner said she will be in court to support her only child, who she described as a typical kid.

"He's my son and I love him.''
