Tofino Whale Almost Jumps Into Boat (VIDEO)

WATCH: Closer Encounters Of the Whale Kind

A group of fishermen in Vancouver Island near Tofino got more than an idyllic trip last month when they stopped their boat to watch a few humpback whales at play.

One of the mammals approached the boat and then leaped into the air before flopping back into the water, narrowly landing in the vessel itself.

"Holy crap," someone can be heard in the video posted on YouTube by MrHD007. "Oh man, he about jumped in our boat."

Matthew Thornton who says he was working as a fishing guide also snapped a photo which he submitted to a National Geographic Traveler photo contest.

"It was quite an experience to see something completely airborne so close to the boat," Thornton described in the photo caption.

The leaping humpback video rivals the Nova Scotia footage of a whale shooting a rainbow out of its blowhole.
