UPDATE: The Calgary Herald reports that 52 rats have now been collected from the Medicine Hat landfill and killed.
"I feel like my life is a lie!"
That was one of the reactions on Twitter as officials announced that Norway rats were found at a Medicine Hat landfill. More than 12 of the rodents were found, Agriculture Minister Verlyn Olson said Wednesday.
Alberta has been rat free and the minister said "we want this dealt with as quickly as possible and we'll keep at it until the issue is resolved."
Residents were tweeting both their dismay with some injection of humour. Others were not surprised by the landfill discovery.
Brittney Le Blanc wrote on Twitter: "19 rats found in a Medicine Hat landfill? I feel like my life is a lie! Might as well join Saskatchewan now.#ratfreeAlberta"
"Probably find rats in every grain silo and feedlot on the east side of the province," wrote @musicbaum. "When they find em they shoot em."
Of course, our favourite ones tend to be on the light side, like this one from Jason Dorn.
"As a side note, if I ever start a beer league hockey team. I'm calling it The Alberta Rats."
