Nazanin Afshin-Jam and her husband, Defence Minister Peter MacKay, are expecting their first child, due at the end of March.
The couple announced the pregnancy at Toronto's Albany Club last night, Global News reported on Thursday night.
MacKay confirmed the news and added to the announcement on his Facebook page this morning:
"I am excited by the prospects of raising a child with my loving wife, along with the support of family and friends in the greatest country on earth. We are simply overjoyed and wish to share our happiness with all of you," he wrote.
Afshin-Jam, an Iranian-born author, human rights activist, former singer and Miss World first runner-up made headlines earlier in the year when she announced Canada should close Iran's embassy in Ottawa
She also spoke out when TD Canada Trust closed Iranian-Canadian clients' accounts in July due to Ottawa's economic sanctions.
She and MacKay married on Jan. 4, 2012.
