The newest addition to Alberta's XL Foods beef recall has crossed an ocean making its way to Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety said that some of the raw beef has been imported in. As a precautionary measure, Hong Kong has suspended imports of XL Foods products produced on and after Aug. 24.
"According to CFS’ initial investigations, a small portion of the products had been distributed to some local retailers," the release said.
The news comes around the same time that U.S. authorities have almost tripled their estimate of the amount of recall beef that was imported from XL Foods.
Eleven illnesses from four Canadian provinces have also been linked to the beef recall. The latest case of E. coli was reported today on Vancouver Island, and the person who tested positive has recovered.
XL Foods came under fire as Alberta Premier Alison Redford demanded answers on testing done at the plant, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency stated that the plant did not follow or update their E. coli plan.
The plant broke its silence last week, taking full responsibility for the recall and pledging to regain the trust of consumers.
The biggest beef recall in Canadian history, the list of recalled products is constantly expanding.
A spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety advised consumers to not consume hamburgers, minced beef, and other meat that were not thoroughly cooked, adding that they were liaising with Canadian authorities and closely monitoring the situation.
