How would we talk about Ottawa if it were a First Nations reserve?
That's the question that's taking Twitter by storm, with users employing the #Ottawapiskat hashtag to take the Harper government to task for its alleged hypocrisy on First Nations issues.
Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence, who is continuing her liquid diet even after Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with aboriginal leaders last week, has been taking fire of late for the financial management of her reserve in northern Ontario.
A scathing audit of the reserve's finances was leaked to the press and it emerged that Spence's partner, Clayton Kennedy, declared personal bankruptcy before taking charge of Attawapiskat's books. Others have questioned the validity of calling Spence's diet of fish broth, tea and vitamins a hunger strike. Overall, not a great week for Spence's image.
Others, however, are wondering how fair it is to scrutinize Spence and Attawapiskat when there is plenty of questionable spending going on in Ottawa as well. The hashtag, which got a shout-out from literary legend Margaret Atwood on Monday, is doing just that.
