Out of the 6 comments so far on this article, I've read one outright racist assumption about the driver, one assuming it must ban an elderly driver and another person assuming that it must be a young driver and yet another assuming it must be an alcoholic. For crying out loud! Let's just have some sympathy for the person who was hit. A paraplegic who now has a broken arm. I hope this person is caught and punished, but more importantly, I hope that the person hit knows that people actually care about what happened to him!

My bet, and I know this sounds racist, but my bet it is that this is a recent immigrant. It seems everytime I hear about these in the news, when they do find the responsible party it's a first or second generation Canadian.

They'll find him. Victoria's a small place, and BC cops are pretty good at tracking these types of crimes. I think punishments should be much, much harsher for hit-n-runs. Automatic 2-year minimum prison sentence (no time served) and 5 year driving ban, plus damages.

Let's see how many hit-n-runs there are then.

What a piece of fecal matter!

Having previously lived in Victoria, my guess is it's probably an elderly driver who really has no business being behind the wheel. As a pedestrian in Victoria I can't count the number of times I narrowly avoided being run over by elderly drivers at crosswalks. The city has such a large retired population, and unfortunately most drivers refuse to admit when their eyesight/reaction times/etc have declined too much due to age for them to remain safe drivers.

That was definitely the case with my grandfather - the man was an absolute menace behind the wheel and had serious health issues, but we couldn't get him to give up driving, and we couldn't get ICBC to take his license away. I consider it lucky that he passed away (basically of old age) before killing someone. He kept driving virtually until the day he died, though.

Probably an alcoholic afraid of losing his/her license.
