How Much Alberta Doctors Make

It's been a rough couple of months for Alberta's health care community.

A lean 2013 provincial budget means no money for doctor wage increases, nurses are facing massive scheduling changes and some claim relationships between the government and health care practitioners in Alberta are at an all-time low.

There are allegations of broken promises between Health Minister Fred Horne and Alberta's physicians. The doctors have been without contracts for two years and negotiations became acrimonious after Horne imposed a wage deal on the doctors four months ago and then withdrew it following an austere budget - and received widespread criticism for the move.

“We’ve plumbed new depths of low — as rock bottom as anyone can ever remember the relationship being,” Dr. Lloyd Maybaum of the Calgary and Area Medical Staff Society told the Calgary Herald late last week.

"We have a minister who has essentially ignored us for two years, entered into numerous processes of negotiation and then backed out, and is now hitting us with a (budget) cut at the end of it," said Dr. Michael Giuffre, the head of the Alberta Medical Association.

"We will not participate in a process to cut $275 million from the physician services budget."

A $3.4-billion health care salary cap equates to slashing salaries by 20 per cent or more over the next few years.
