Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Edmonton area, which includes the risk of tornadoes.

The storm could also bring with it large hail, heavy rain and damaging winds, the weather website warns.

The watch covers much of Central Alberta, including Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Drayton Valley, Mayerthorpe, White Court and Rocky Mountain House.

The thunderstorms are forecast to form near the foothills early this afternoon before tracking northeast to the Capital region.
