Calgary, Canmore Flood Evacuees To Get Pre-Loaded Debit Cards Sunday

06/29/2013 10:50 EDT

Calgary and Canmore flood victims forced from their homes will be able to pick up pre-loaded debit cards issued by the province starting Sunday.

The cards, which are loaded with $1,250 per adult and $500 per child, are one of the ways the province says it will help those dealing with the destruction from the flood get back on their feet.

Although the cards are already in circulation in High River, the cards will be available for those in Calgary and Canmore who qualify on Sunday starting at 1 p.m., the province announced.

“I made a commitment to get assistance into the hands of those who are still displaced by the flood, as quickly as possible,” said Premier Alison Redford.

“With the initial two centres open in High River, we will now open four new centres to get assistance into the hands of those who need it. We anticipate long lineups tomorrow and I ask for your patience as staff will be working as hard as possible to serve as many people as they can.”

Who Will Get a PAYMENT

Evacuees can get a payment if they:

Were issued an evacuation order, and are unable to return home for a minimum of 7 days.

How to Get a card/PAYMENT

Evacuees must register with the Canadian Red Cross at redcross.ca/abregister or 1-866-696-6484, if they haven’t already registered.

A primary applicant may bring photo ID, SIN, proof of relationships within the evacuated household, or proof of their main home address including postal code to a pre-loaded debit card processing site.

If an evacuee is unable to attend the debit card processing site in person then a family member may attend on his or her behalf and sign a declaration of relationship to the evacuee. The family member must take the evacuee’s proof of residency and registration documents.

Evacuees who don’t have photo ID, proof of relationship, or proof of where they live may make a statutory declaration.

The pre-loaded debit card will allow for immediate cash withdrawals at ATMs, debit machines and internet purchases. Cash withdrawals are limited to $400 per transaction with no daily limit on the number of transactions. There are no fees associated with the pre-loaded debit cards, however bank- set service charges may be incurred for withdrawals at ATMs.
