Life just got a bit nicer for the shelter cats at the Toronto Humane Society. The shelter, with the help of Purina and environmental group Evergreen, installed a rooftop garden for cats (and humans) last month.

The garden, located on the Humane Society's previously unused roof, should allow the cats to frolic out of their cages.

"To see them running and playing is such an incredible experience,” Humane Society Barbara Steinhoff told the blog Catster.

Of course the garden will have catnip but Evergreen has also planted a range of local plants to provide shade and food. The garden's herbs, fruit and vegetables will be used to feed some of the rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals at the shelter. Lucky volunteers may also get to take some of the produce home.

The best part is that the Toronto Humane Society won't be the only one to get a green space for its animals and volunteers. Purina donated $50,000 to help Evergreen find four other shelters around Canada develop green spaces.
