One person is dead after a single vehicle collision on Anthony Henday Drive on Saturday around noon.

The driver of a SUV reportedly hit a pole near 91 Street for unknown reasons, and the vehicle caught on fire.

The male driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead on the scene. EMS and Edmonton Fire Rescue responded to the scene and the fire was extinguished.

“At this point we are looking to determine why the vehicle left the road – whether it was driver or mechanical error, a medical episode, distracted driving, speed, or some other factor,” said Sgt. Gener Alvarado with the EPS MCI Unit 2 in a statement.

“We had witnesses on scene just after it occurred who attempted to help the driver of the vehicle and were unsuccessful,” said Constable Scott Deputat to Global News.

The identity of the man has not been released and police are working to identify the next of kin.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service.
