Calgary Icicles Are Huge And Kind Of Scary (PHOTO, TWEETS)

LOOK: Monster Icicles So Big They're Scary

Heads up, Calgary. No, seriously. You need to watch out for those icicles.

Mammoth icicles have formed around the city, clinging from eavestroughs, overhangs, and undersides of cars.

Many of the icicles have reached lengths of more than a metre long, caused by a recent cycle of freeze and thaw, explains Telus Spark scientist Devon Hamilton.

Hamilton told CBC News the unusually long icicles form when melted snow refreezes as its running down existing ice.

"That warm air, that is given up by those ice droplets that are freezing, rises up and forms a nice blanket. Which means at the base, or the thicker part of the icicle, you are more likely to have liquid flowing. And as it gets down to the tip, the air is a little bit cooler, you got less of that warm blanket and that means it's likely to freeze," he explained.

Calgarians who want to take a whack at the pointy ice should do so with caution, warns one teen whose battle against the icicles hanging over his porch led to injury.

Dominic Petti told the Calgary Sun his face was cut by flying ice after whacking at some icicles with a hockey stick.

“I should probably refrain from hitting icicles in the future,” he said.
