The Edmonton Oilers ranked second on a list of the most and least efficient teams in North American sports.

The Edmonton Oilers are not just one of the worst hockey teams in the NHL; they're also the second-least efficient in all of North American team sports.

So says Bloomberg Businessweek, which crunched the numbers and found that the Oilers just aren't gaining enough bang for their buck when it comes to wins.

The business news outlet ranked teams based on how much they spent on player payroll for each win in the last five seasons. Teams were also compared against the average price per win in their respective leagues in order to come up with an efficiency score.

The smaller the score, the better.

Edmonton managed an efficiency rating of 2.2134. It has won an average of 28.2 games in the last five seasons, below the league average 37.6, while its average player payroll of $54.3 million was also under the NHL average of $55.6 million.

It came second only to the Chicago Cubs, whose efficiency score was 2.6101. The baseball club's average payroll of $119.8 million was well over the league average of $94.8 million, but it only helped them generate an average 71.2 wins in the last five seasons, which also came below the MLB average of 81.

Following the Oilers among Canadian hockey teams was the Calgary Flames, which had a score of 1.2455, followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs with 1.2111 and the Winnipeg Jets with 0.9082.

It wasn't always this bad for the Oil. The Edmonton Journal pointed out that in 2004, ESPN ranked them as the most bang-for-your-buck franchise in all professional sports.

Fans on the West Coast shouldn't feel too much schadenfreude about the Oilers' misery. The Vancouver Canucks fell out of the playoff contention for the first time since 2008. Depending on how much they spend on players in the next few seasons, they could have some difficulty racking up wins.

For now, Canadians ought to rally around the Montreal Canadiens, who swept the Tampa Bay Lightning in four games and are currently waiting to find out who they'll face in the second round.
