Calgary police are investigating the death of a 54-year-old man who was killed after being run over by a train in Inglewood early Sunday morning.

Police say the man and his 49-year-old common law wife became impatient with a slow-moving Canadian Pacific train at the 8th Street S.E. crossing around 6:30 a.m.

Instead of waiting for the train to pass, the man decided to crawl under the cars.

“It was a slow-moving train and it ran him over. It was simply an accident," Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey told the Calgary Herald.

As a result, the man sustained multiple amputations, and was taken to hospital where he later died.

CP spokesman Andy Cummings told the Calgary Sun the train crew spotted the man and called for help.

“Their first concern was with the injured person and they didn’t immediately realize their train was involved until further review,” he said, adding that the operator stopped the train immediately after learning what had happened.

Police say alcohol was a factor.

The man's girlfriend was not injured.

Both are believed to be homeless.
