Filmmaker Michael Moore's impassioned Facebook post about gun violence in America quickly went viral on Saturday. But he got one thing very, very wrong.
"While other countries have ... more guns per capita in their homes (Canada [mostly hunting guns]) ... no one even comes close to killing as many of its own citizens on a daily basis as we do." Moore wrote after the UCSB shooting rampage. Neither of those statements is correct.
A 2007 study conducted by the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey found that at 89 guns per 100 residents, The United States actually has the most firearms on a per capita basis. Canada ranked 13th in the study, with 30.8 guns per 100 residents.
And The United States does not have the world's highest murder rate (though it is much higher than in Canada). A long list of nations in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa have more homicides each year on a per capita basis, according to 2010 numbers from The United Nations.
