CALGARY — A total of 20 firearms have been stolen in two break-ins at Calgary's Shooting Edge gun range and gun shop.
Police say the first theft of guns happened in the early morning hours of May 11, when thieves smashed a display case with a baseball bat and took several guns.
The second occurred Monday morning when the front window of the shooting range was smashed to get at some weapons.
However, Shooting Edge owner JR Cox told Global News he is not suspicious of his staff.
“After we reviewed security tapes and you see how it went down, it made me feel good, if nothing else. I think my staff have been cleared by this.”
Police acting Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn told CTV News the store has an older security system that apparently wasn't working.
Cox says he is "completely and totally" embarrassed by the faulty security system.
"It’s almost like we have this moral contract with the people of Calgary saying, ‘We can have our firearms but we have to look after them.’ And then for the security system to fail so spectacularly that they can get in, it’s heartbreaking," he told the Calgary Herald.
Shooting Edge Thefts
Cox explained to the Calgary Sun that in both break-ins the alarm was not triggered and had not been turned off.
Cox says he is looking into security flaws and is in the process of having them fixed.
Police have released photos of a man from the first theft in the hope it will generate leads.
There are no suspects at this time, reports the Calgary Sun.
