A Facebook event called "Vancouver Full Moon Beach Party" has over 7,000 attendees, but RCMP are vowing to bury the shindig in the sand.
Organized by Vancouver-based DJ Bjorn, no location for the event has been officially announced. But many in the Facebook group are speculating it will take place at Wreck Beach, notorious for open alcohol and drug consumption.
"Every summer you can find me all over Vancouver DJing at almost every beach over the course of the summer," DJ Bjorn wrote on his website. "Day time is almost always at English Bay and we also set up for afterhours (starting at 3am), but those locations are kept secret till the very night."
But UBC RCMP say they'll be ready to block people from entering the clothing-optional beach if they show up.
“It is a contravention of a (Metro) Parks bylaw for anyone to access the beach after sunset,” UBC RCMP spokesman Sgt. Drew Grainger told The Province. Tickets and arrests are possible, but officers would rather make a "public service announcement" asking anyone who is thinking about heading to the beach that night to stay away, he told the newspaper.
Last month, UBC RCMP announced it was setting up a collapsible tent at Wreck Beach every afternoon until Labour Day to better control public safety. Many beach users and local residents were angered by what they consider an intrusive and unnecessary police presence.
