MMVAs: Lorde (and Her Lamp) Rule The 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards

Lorde And Her Lamp Rule The 2014 MMVAs
MuchMusic

Star-crossed stars Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez may have won the big MMVAs -- Your Fave Artist and Your Fave International Artist, respectively -- but since the pop prince and princess failed to actually, y'know, show up at the MuchMusic Video Awards, Lorde got to be the award show's real royal.

In fact, not only did Lorde win International Video of the Year for "Royals" and deliver an intense, Goth-tinged performance of "Tennis Court" and "Team" that pretty much crushed everyone else, the floor lamp she caressed throughout had its own Twitter account before the MMVAs even ended.

Backstage, Lorde discussed what the past year's success has taught her. "It takes a certain energy to succeed in front of a lot of people. It's something I've had to learn. Communicating with one person is one thing but trying to communicate with the whole world is very different." Hence, I guess, the lamp.

She also addressed her recent gig performing with Nirvana at their Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame induction. "I thought maybe someone had written the wrong name in the email," she said. "But it was amazing, it was such an honour, and the guys int he band are the three loveliest people you could meet on this journey so it was an honour helping them."

MMVA favourite Hedley won the most MMVAs, though, opening the show with a cheerleading squad and then taking home Video of the Year, Pop Video of the Year and Your Fave Video for "Anything."

Drake, another no-show, claimed best hip-hop video for "Worst Behavior" and International Video of the Year by a Canadian for “Hold On, We’re Going Home”

Imagine Dragons claimed International Video of the Year for "Radioactive," and got the crowd to sing "Happy Birthday" to guitarist Wayne Sermon, while Sam Roberts Band claimed Rock/Alternative Video of the Year for "Shape Shifters."

Kim Kardashian's little half-sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner were the hosts, but proved to be barely more capable than Kendall was when she flubbed her lines at the Billboard Awards.

More effective was Ed Sheeran who followed up last year's appearance with a return engagement as a proper pop star who not only performed a stripped-down "Sing" but also hit the red carpet in a food truck. Ariana Grande, meanwhile, performed "Problem" with gaggle of shirtless bros to close the show.

But 25 years into the MMVAs celebration of music videos, and several years past the channel regularly playing them, its the viral takeaway of award shows that resonate more than anything else. And so the real 2014 MMVA goes to Lorde's lamp which was the Miley Space Cat of the 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards.

Long may it reign.
