Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch for much of southern Alberta.
Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre, Drumheller, Three Hills, Hanna, Coronation, Oyen, Red Deer, Ponoka, Innisfail and Stettler are all included in the watch.
“Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches,” the national weather agency said in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.
Severe thunderstorms warnings are also in effect for much of the area, including the City of Calgary, Wainwright, Lloydminster, Red Deer, Innisfail, Ponoka, Drumheller and Hanna.
There is the possibility of strong winds, large hail and heavy rain.
Environment Canada warns in the circumstance of a tornado people should stay inside and take shelter on the lowest floor, away from walls, doors and and windows.
“Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.”
The areas under the tornado watch include:
- Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
- Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
- Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
- Mountain View Co. near Sundre
- Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
- Rocky View Co. near Bottrel and Madden
- Rocky View Co. near Cochrane
