'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Soundtrack Is Indeed An 'Awesome' Mix

LISTEN: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Soundtrack Is Out Of This World
Marvel Comics

When the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trailer first blew up the Internets, it was initially in large part thanks to the incongruous "ooga chakas" from the song "Hooked on a Feeling."

Most of us probably thought it was just a creative decision for the trailer to let people know this wouldn't be your average sci-fi film. While that is no doubt true, the decision extends far beyond the trailer. The soundtrack is practically a character in the film, coming as it does from a mixtape belonging to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) which is a major plot point, as is the Walkman that he plays the songs on.

The "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" tape was made by Quill's mom in the 1980s, and features familiar music from that era and earlier, which winds up making this very strange sci-fi epic far more accessible to viewers unfamiliar with the obscure comics.

"When I first started writing my first draft of the script, which was significantly different from the things that came before it, the first thing that I centered around was the Sony Walkman," Gunn told the Huffington Post. "To me, really the heart of the film is the Sony Walkman, because that exemplifies the relationship between Peter Quill and his mother."

Here are the songs you can expect to hear when you go see this fantastic Marvel film, and which you'll likely want to continue listening to for months afterward, ranging from 10cc's I'm Not in Love" to The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" to The Runaways "Cherrybomb."

Oh, and to put the "Guardians of the Galaxy" soundtrack into proper context, we've also included a feature on the best movie and TV soundtracks and songs.
