Dalai Lama In Vancouver To Meet Students And Celebrities

Lululemon announced a new partnership with the Dalai Lama Centre for Peace and Education in Vancouver to coincide with the spiritual leader's visit to the city.

The Vancouver-based yogawear company is pledging $750,000 in funding over the next three years to help develop young people into compassionate leaders, said a release from the Dalai Lama Centre on Tuesday.

The Dalai Lama is in Vancouver for three days this week. He stopped by John Oliver Secondary on Tuesday morning, where he talked with 1,400 students and staff about the connection between all humans, said Global News.

“On a fundamental level, I am a human being — there is no difference between us. In the long run, we need to develop our sense of the oneness of humanity,” said the Dalai Lama according to The Province.

The Dalai Lama then headed to the Heart-Mind Summit at the Vancouver Convention Center where he spoke to community and business leaders about the wellbeing of children and youth in British Columbia.

But not everybody was delighted by his visit.

A group of protesters gathered outside both events demanding he reverse the ban on the worship of Dorje Shugden, a spirit known to Tibetans as Dogyal, Metro News reported.

Darren Prout, a spokesman from the International Shugden Community, said the Dalai Lama's ban has led to discrimination against believers. They want to publicize their plight and get the spiritual leader to give them "religious freedom."

The Dalai Lama also met with several celebrities, including Selena Gomez, who were in town for We Day — an event that empowers youth to create positive change in the world.

The Dalai Lama will spend Thursday at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium, where he will speak about wisdom and compassion. Proceeds from the event will go towards a program to help 1,000 displaced Tibetans in Canada, Global said.
