It's not unusual for hockey's most boisterous personality to speak what's on his mind.
Yes, we're used to "Coach's Corner" host Don Cherry bashing certain players and taking pot-shots at NHL teams he doesn't like, but we this is a little unusual -- Cherry airing his frustrations about the lack of "Coach's Corner" airtime.
Rogers Communications purchased "Hockey Night In Canada" approximately one year ago in a massive 12-year, $5.2-billion agreement between the telecommunications giant and the NHL. Rogers appointed Canadian personality George Stroumboulopoulos as host of the show, but emphasized that "HNIC" would continue -- though they didn't specify if the show would have any changes to format, structure, or length.
Now a month into the 2014-15 hockey season, Cherry let loose during the first-intermission segment of "HNIC" on Saturday night. (You can watch the video, above.) Cherry makes seven references to his "lack of time" -- and says he's "gotta hurry." It seems the acerbic Canadian personality feels like "Coach's Corner" isn't getting enough minutes.
In the just-over five minutes of this latest rendition of "Coach's Corner," Cherry makes at least six different comments about the lack of airtime:
"I don’t have much time, as usual, folks."
"We over yet?"
"I gotta talk fast, boy. You gotta pay attention to me, because I don’t get much time."
"Why are we tight? Why are we tight?"
"Anyhow, we gotta end right now."
"Folks, I’m sorry. I just got on and we have to end."
