Hello Kitty is set to hit a theatre near you.
The popular Japanese children's character that adorns a plethora of products such as pillows, bags, cameras and even toasters is set to feature in a movie that's been slated for a 2019 release, The Japan Times reported.
The project, budgeted at anywhere from US$162 million to $244 million, is being produced through Sanrio Media and Pictures Entertainment Inc., a subsidiary that was set up in the U.S. in June.
It was established in an effort to market Sanrio's brand around the world, Deadline reported. The company is expected to set up a fund to raise money that will help it produce the movie.
But Hello Kitty isn't the only Sanrio character who could find her way to the big screen. Sanrio's Little Miss and Mr. Men characters have already had their rights picked up by Fox Animation Studios.
It's not yet certain whether we'll see other Sanrio figures such as Kerokerokeroppi, Pochacco, Pekkle or Bad Badtz-Maru make their way to the screen. But one thing's for sure: there's no shortage of moviemaking potential among its adorable characters.
