We've just found our new body image hero.
Meet Iskra Lawrence, a model from Worcestershire who is putting her huge social media following to good use by promoting body positivity.
The 25-year-old size-14 model, who is also the managing editor for Runway Riot, is taking a stance against Photoshopping and retouching because, as she puts it, "Who says cellulite is a flaw[?] YOU decide what beauty is and it's deeper than skin deep."
💙🌊going for a swim in the jungle yesterday🌴🐳 doing a meet & greet TODAY 6-6.30pm at plaza las Americas mall in Puerto Rico at the Aerie store! 🚫no filter🚫 no retouching, because who says cellulite is a flaw - YOU decide what beauty is and it's deeper than skin deep💚 #iskralawrence #everyBODYisbeautiful
According to Runway Riot, the "champion of body diversity" was often told she was "too big" by modelling agencies, yet "not big enough" for plus-modelling auditions. Now, she is signed to JAG Models and is devoted to improving the image of women in the media. All of her Instagram photos are captioned with body positive comments, and often hashtagged with #everyBODYisbeautiful to promote self-love and acceptance. She even lovingly refers to her marks as "tiger stripe stretch marks" and "cellulite lightening bolts."
✨💕 oh hey there.. Yes this is clearly a booty pic but do you see why? Because I haven't airbrushed my tiger stripe stretch marks 🐯 or my cellulite lightening bolts ⚡️ or my back fat 🌮🍔🍕because this is my body, I love it it's real and I love posting pictures showing how confident I am because society has taught us we have "flaws" and I'm telling you who gives a.. Because you are more than your body and you get to decide what beauty is❤️ #iskralawrence #everyBODYisbeautiful pic by @imruhul tag a friend who's flaws are flawless & are imperfectly perfect 😚💕✨
"You won't see me promoting tea detoxs(sic) or anything that I don't actually use or wear or believe in," Iskra captions an Instagram post. "I am NOT an Instagram model and do not earn a living off it. I post because I hope to grow my platform to share my experiences and hopefully help other girls that are going through what I went through."
✨💙 its impossible to represent everyone, as a model I feel I have a responsibility to do my best & keep it real. We are all human, those "flaws" society told us we have aren't "flaws" at all but our individual beautiful markings. You won't see me promoting tea detoxs or anything that I don't actually use or wear or believe in. I am NOT an Instagram model and do not earn a living off it. I post because I hope to grow my platform to share my experiences and hopefully help other girls that are going through what I went through. Thank you So much to all of you who support me I appreciate every single one of you...Any hate I receive does not affect me because I now know beauty is more than skin deep and we are all more than our bodies and I hope that anyone who's struggling out there can believe their self worth is NOT based on other peoples or societies opinion of beauty. That you are beautiful because you are YOU🙌🏻✨💕 also forget to mention I made 5 vids for @shape_magazine about body confidence workout & what I eat if you wanna check em out👆🏼link is in my bio👆🏼 #iskralawrence #everyBODYisbeautiful
As Bustle puts it, Lawrence's refusal to retouch her pics is a "bold, body positive move forward against the Photoshopping culture of our mainstream media and society," especially in a world where "Instagram models" and celebrities are known to heavily edit their images.
☀️I hope that as we stand strong together in 2016 we will change societies perception of beauty. From a standard set by others opinions of our outwardly appearance to that of the appreciation of each individual's diversity of mind, spirit unique talents & gifts. My focus this year will remain the same, love harder, give more and be grateful everyday 🙏🏼✨💘 #iskralawrence #everyBODYisbeautiful my personal journey of body image & the media @therunwayriot 👆🏼link in bio👆🏼👙 @aerie 🚫no filter 🚫no retouching
"I will keep putting out images that have 🚫no retouching 🚫no filter because It's not up to society or the media to tell you that your so called 'flaws' or 'imperfections' aren't beautiful - you are all perfectly imperfect because you are you!" Lawrence writes in one post.
