Dolce & Gabbana's New Handbags And T-Shirts Celebrate Same Sex Families

Looks like the #DGFamily is becoming much more diverse.

Looks like the #DGFamily now includes same sex families.

Almost one year after Dolce & Gabbana designer Domenico Dolce came under fire for his controversial remarks about same sex families and in vitro fertilization, the Italian fashion house has released a new line of handbags and T-shirts that features a more diverse type of family.

One handbag sees two fathers with their three children, one of whom is noticeably darker. Another sees two mothers and their two children. The T-shirts feature similar depictions.

These bags and tees are a far cry from what the designers had originally described as the "traditional" family.

"We oppose gay adoptions — the only family is the traditional one,” Dolce told Italian mag Panorama last March. "No chemical offspring and rented uterus. Life has a natural flow; there are things that cannot be changed."

The designer later apologized for his remarks after it sparked a Dolce & Gabbana boycott from celebrities like Elton John, Ricky Martin and consumers.

"I’ve done some soul-searching. I’ve talked to Stefano a lot about this. I’ve realized that my words were inappropriate, and I apologize. They are just kids," he told Vogue in August.

What makes this collection even more interesting, however, is that it comes at a time when politicians in Italy are set to vote on a bill that may recognize same-sex civil unions and permit legal adoption, as the Guardian notes.

While reps for the brand say the designers won't comment on whether the new line is connected to the upcoming vote, it is expected to hit stores soon.
